Rocky planet discovered in outer orbit challenges planet formation theory

An international group of astronomers has identified a faraway planetary system that calls into question one of the most widely accepted ideas about how planets take shape. In most planetary systems observed across the Milky Way, scientists see the same basic layout. Small, rocky planets circle close to their star, while large gas giants orbit at greater distances. Our own Solar System fits this pattern. The inner planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, are made mostly of rock and metal. Farther out, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are dominated by thick layers of gas. This arrangement is explained by a leading theory of planet formation. Young stars emit intense radiation that can strip away gases from nearby developing planets, leaving behind solid, rocky worlds. Farther from the st...

Simulation showing what it would look like to go around Earth at the speed of light is absolutely wild

This simulation showed what it would look like if you went around Earth at the speed of light, and it’s mind-blowing. How fast is the speed of light exactly? 186,000 miles per second – try to visualize that. Well, thanks to a simulation posted to YouTube by Airplane Mode, you needn’t imagine any longer. Buckle up, because it’s time to take a trip around the world in a matter of seconds. EXPLORE SBX CARS – Supercar auctions starting soon powered by Supercar Blondie Around the world at the speed of light If you were to fly around the world at a cruising speed of between 575mph and 600mph, you could theoretically do it within 42 hours. At the speed of light? It can be done in 0.13 seconds. Airplane Mode Starting in New York City, the simulation passed across the U...

Scientists say genetic analysis could greatly speed restoration of iconic American chestnut | News, Sports, Jobs

(AP Photo/Adrian Kraus, File) WASHINGTON (AP) — Billions of American chestnut trees once covered the eastern United States. They soared in height, producing so many nuts that sellers moved them by train car. Every Christmas, they’re called to mind by the holiday lyric “chestnuts roasting on an open fire.” But by the 1950s, this venerable tree went functionally extinct, culled by a deadly airborne fungal blight and lethal root rot. A new study out Thursday in the journal Science provides hope for its ...

These 35mm Film Rolls Are Actually Tiny Digital Keychain Cameras

After the success of the Kodak Charmera, it’s no surprise to see yet more keychain cameras: step forward the OPT100 Neo Film, a miniature camera made to look like a roll of 35mm film. Like the Kodak Charmera, the OPT100 Neo Film is currently very difficult to get hold of. The miniature camera is made by Opt!, a Japanese brand, and it seems to only be available from retailers in the country. But they do ship internationally and are available on websites like eBay. Miles Myerscough-Harris, aka Expired Film Club, just got his hands on one of the novelty cameras. “It’s literally the exact same size and shape as a roll of film,” he says. As Myerscough-Harris shows, the Neo Film comes in a cardboard box, just like a real roll of film. But the stalk at the top of the canister is actually ...

Scientists have likened a tumor to a wound that does not heal. Some of the same tissue responses that heal wounds operate in canc...

Santa Monica Developing More Than Just God of War Trilogy Remake, It’s Claimed

A new claim reveals that another title is in the works at Santa Monica Studios, alongside the God of War Trilogy Remake, which could be Cory Barlog’s game. There were many God of War titles rumoured to be in development, including a multiplayer title and one set in Egyptian mythology. Out of all the rumoured ones, the Trilogy Remake and Sons of Sparta got confirmed yesterday. However, there is one more title players have been curious about: Cory Barlog’s next game, for which we seem to have new details. Cory Barlog’s Game Could Be Revealed Soon During a new discussion on ResetEra, shinobi602 replied ‘naw’ when asked “Please shinobi602 tell us that the GoW remake is not the Cory Barlog project? The insider then added that the game is “Not that far (barring any delays of cours...

Astronomers watch a massive star collapse into a black hole without a supernova

Astronomers have directly observed a massive dying star skip a supernova explosion and instead collapse into a black hole. This event provides the most detailed set of observations ever assembled of a star making that transition, giving researchers an unusually complete view of how stellar black holes form. By combining fresh telescope data with more than a decade of archived observations, scientists were able to test and refine long standing theories about how the most massive stars end their lives. Rather than exploding outward in a brilliant supernova, this star's core gave way under gravity and formed a black hole. In the process, its unstable outer layers were gradually pushed outward. The findings, published February 12 in Science, are drawing attention because they offer a rare look...
