Greece to open Komotini gas compression station to boost regional exports

Greece to open Komotini gas compression station to boost regional exports

A new natural gas compression station will be inaugurated on Tuesday in Komotini, northern Greece, in a project aimed at strengthening Greece’s role as a key supply channel for Southeast Europe.

The 134 million euro project increases the country’s capacity to export natural gas to Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine, supporting the development of the so-called vertical corridor for regional energy supply, officials said.

The opening comes days after recent European Union decisions to phase out dependence on Russian natural gas and ahead of the intergovernmental transatlantic energy cooperation (P-TEC) meeting on Thursday and Friday.

Government representatives from Europe and the United States are expected to attend the P-TEC meeting, which will focus on investments in infrastructure to reduce reliance on Russian gas and expand liquefied natural gas supply through both existing and new facilities.
