Greece’s elite special operations command has begun receiving new Finnish-made sniper rifles, fulfilling a long-standing requirement to upgrade the weaponry of military sharpshooters, defense officials said.
The Special Warfare Command of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff, the joint command overseeing all Greek special operations forces, recently took delivery of the first batch of TRG M10 multicaliber sniper rifles manufactured by Finland’s Sako.
The initial shipment includes 90 rifles, with the remaining 29 from the original order expected to arrive in the coming months.
The €6.12 million modernization program had faced delays at Greece’s Court of Audit, reportedly due to complications involving the extension of a support contract to cover ammunition. The issues were later resolved, and the General Directorate for Defense Investments and Armaments signed the procurement agreement with the manufacturer in March 2025. The first rifles were delivered to the armed forces in recent days.
On Tuesday morning, Special Warfare Command personnel conducted their first live-fire tests with the new rifles at the Kandili army practice range near Megara, west of Athens. Multiple configurations were tested, and additional trials are planned, including firing from a helicopter – one of the most demanding operational scenarios for military snipers.
The rifles will be distributed to special operations units, including the Greek Army’s Special Parachute Regiment, the Z Amphibious Raider Squadron and the Hellenic Navy Special Operations Command. Authorities are also considering equipping National Guard special units stationed on remote border islands.
With an effective range exceeding 800 meters and centimeter-level precision, the new system is expected to significantly enhance operational capabilities, officials said. Greek military snipers have earned notable distinctions in NATO competitions in recent years.
The TRG M10, considered among the world’s leading long-range precision rifles, was selected after extensive testing that included day- and night-firing trials at very long distances.
The bolt-action, magazine-fed rifle is designed for multiple calibers and features a fully adjustable stock and high configurability, allowing it to be adapted quickly from a long-range precision weapon into a more compact system suited to varied operational conditions.
