The event highlighted the ethics of design and featured a “Responsible Runway” presentation at a downtown gallery in conjunction with Wesleyan College.

WGXA News had the opportunity to go behind the scenes with Isaiah Miller, a self-taught clothing designer, inside his shared studio space at the Creative Alternative. Miller, who returned to Macon from Charlotte, is sharing his industry knowledge with students at Wesleyan College, His work has been featured in museums and magazines, and on Wednesday night, he was a featured artist at the event.

Miller’s designs are unique in that they begin as something entirely different. Using repurposed materials donated by Goodwill, he transforms items like curtains into fashion pieces. “I went straight to the curtains,” Miller said, describing how he crafted a skirt and top from drapes. From cutting and sewing to adding a zipper, Miller demonstrated his skill and creativity. “I’m building the zipper fly for the back of the skirt,” he explained.
In just two and a half hours, Miller’s process of pinning and altering turned what was once meant to block light into a creation ready to shine on the runway. The event underscored the potential of sustainable fashion and the innovative spirit of designers like Miller. Wesleyan students also strutted the runway in their own designs.

Fashion enthusiasts and style aficionados are in for a treat this Thursday with two captivating events that promise to elevate personal style and explore the deeper meanings behind attire.
The evening kicks off with “Elevate Your Style,” a vibrant discussion on color theory, therapy, and psychology led by Andrea Cooke, Lakesia Toomer, Brandon Harris, Jeremy Grissom, Yurie Hayashi, Maiesha Clark, and Dr. Gloria Cissé. Attendees will have the opportunity to witness live styling demonstrations by local retailers. The event is set to take place from 6 to 7 p.m. at Emerson at Plum. Participants are encouraged to showcase their personal style or arrive in basics to be styled live.
Following this, “Armor and Adornment” will delve into the rich narratives of Indigenous and Drag attire. Tracie Revis and Christina León will lead a conversation focusing on storytelling, protection, and decoration through clothing. This engaging dialogue will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the garden of Fall Line Brewing Co. Attendees are invited to adorn themselves and embrace their true selves.
Both events promise to offer unique insights into the world of fashion and personal expression.
