The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) is implementing new safeguards to protect sports gamblers after NBA players and coaches were indicted by the FBI.

Federal authorities say the NBA scandal is tied to organized crime syndicates and an illegal mafia-backed poker cheating ring. They allege that confidential player information was misused and of proposition wagers or “prop bets” were manipulated.

In response to these indictments, robust regulatory frameworks are being put in place by the MGCB to prevent fraud and protect consumers.

“The integrity of sports betting in Michigan depends on more than enforcement — it requires proactive safeguards designed to detect and deter misconduct before it occurs,” said MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams.
