Students at Jericho High School are celebrating becoming semi-finalists in the Regeneron Science Competition.

“It means a lot to get recognized for all the work that we all put in. Everyone in this room has put in a ton of work,” said Vedant Balani, a 12th grader at Jericho High School.

The school is also celebrating, as Jericho has the most semi-finalist students in the country – with a total of 10.

Long Island had 33 – the most for any region.

“It’s the oldest and most prestigious science fair for high school students in the United States,” said Alexis Vandergoot, science research coordinator at Jericho High School.

For Jericho High School senior Anchita Agrawal, the win is personal.

“I want to become an oncologist to honor my mom’s experience with breast cancer,” she said.

Her project focused on understanding how cancer cells grow, hoping it leads to a way to defeat the disease

“Just continue doing all these amazing things to improve people’s and patients’ lives,” she said.

Her classmates beat out 2,600 students from 826 high schools across the United States.

Semi-finalists are awarded $2,000 for this achievement.

A total of 40 finalists will be picked at the end of January, and winners will be chosen at the end of March in Washington, D.C.
