LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – United ISD held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new veterinary science program at United High School that will certify students as veterinary assistants.
Eighteen students will be the first in the district to participate in the course. The ceremony included the students and their new teacher, Kassandra Garcia, Principal Jessica Salazar, district leaders and members of the UHS Student Council.
Board Member Michelle Molina brought the idea to the district after students approached her two years ago, requesting veterinary classes so they could pursue careers helping animals and stay in UISD.
“This is going to create amazing partnerships with our community, with our municipalities,” Molina said. “As you know, this is a very much underserved area in our city and our county.”
Students in the Career and Technical Education program will complete 300 hours of clinical experience with licensed veterinarians or veterinary technicians. The hands-on training will prepare them to take the Certified Veterinary Assistant Level I exam.
Seven local clinics have partnered with the district: C&C Veterinary Services, Laredo Pet Vet, Veterinary Care Center of Laredo, Rio Grande Veterinary Clinic, Critter Care, Laredo Animal Clinic and the City of Laredo Animal Care Services.
