A 2009 rom-com headlined by Gerard Butler is set to exit Netflix‘s content library next month. Despite its less-than-favorable reception from critics, audiences liked it, helping the film become a commercial success.
The Ugly Truth leaves Netflix in March
The Ugly Truth is leaving Netflix on Sunday, March 1, 2026.
The story follows Abby Ritcher, a TV producer and a believer in true love, and Mike Chadway, the host of “The Ugly Truth” and a relationship expert who doesn’t share that belief. When Mike joins Abby’s morning show, they frequently clash over their opposing views on love. He eventually makes a deal to help Abby improve her relationship with Colin. While his tips seem to work, Abby slowly starts to develop feelings for Mike.
Robert Luketic directed the film with a script by Nicole Eastman. It stars Katherine Heigl as Abby, Gerard Butler as Mike, Eric Winter as Colin, John Michael Higgins as Larry Freeman, and Bree Turner as Joy. The film also features special appearances from Craig Ferguson, Yvette Nicole Brown, Cheryl Hines, and Kevin Connolly.
Released on July 24, 2009, The Ugly Truth received negative reviews from professional critics, and currently has an approval rating of 14% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the audience had a more favorable opinion. The film went on to earn more than $205 million worldwide, surpassing its reported $38 million budget, per Box Office Mojo. Additionally, more than 15 years later, it maintains a respectable 60% audience score from over 250,000 users.
In a 2009 interview, screenwriter Karen McCullah Lutz revealed that Eastman wrote the original script a decade before the film was produced. Interestingly, the studio had reportedly considered casting Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben Affleck (via Zamm). However, the roles ultimately landed with Heigl and Butler.
