There’s perhaps no genre that better aligns with the nature of cinema as a storytelling medium than the action genre. Film is all about motion; and, likewise, action movies are all about constant movement, combat, thrills, and adventure. There are other things that action movie fans look for when they sit down to watch a new film, however. Perhaps they’re looking for romance, or a fast-paced narrative, or innovative set pieces, or highly stylized violence. No matter what it is they’re looking for, it’s an action film’s responsibility to deliver.
There are some action flicks that deliver everything anyone could possibly want from the genre and then some, and those are the movies that inevitably end up going down in history as some of the greatest ever made. Whether it’s an international classic like Hard Boiled, a Hollywood blockbuster like Sinners, or an arthouse action masterpiece like Harakiri, these films prove that it’s perfectly possible to satisfy action cinema fans, no matter how demanding they are.

‘Hard Boiled’ (1992)
Hong Kong action cinema is one of the most legendary national action film industries—and, at least by mainstream audiences in the West, usually also one of the most underappreciated. And if there’s one Hong Kong filmmaker who defined action cinema for the entire world, it has to be John Woo, one of the most essential faces in a hypothetical Mount Rushmore of action movie directors.
Woo practically invented gun fu, an action subgenre that’s all about mixing dynamic gunplay and close-quarters martial arts combat. Woo perfected the subgenre in 1992 with Hard Boiled, a film that’s pure spectacle and chaotic (though perfectly understandable) fight choreography. People who love the likes of John Wick and The Matrix ought to check out Hard Boiled, the single most essential gun fu masterpiece in history.

‘Star Wars: Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back’ (1980)
In 1977, George Lucas didn’t just create one of the most iconic sci-fi movies of all time: He birthed one of the biggest pop-cultural phenomenons in history. Star Wars is a true juggernaut of an IP, but even almost 50 years after its creation, the franchise has never been able to top Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back. It’s still the fantasy/sci-fi space opera par excellence, and something very special will be needed to over surpass it.
It’s one of the best movie masterpieces of the last 50 years, and it’s also unequivocally an action film. The space chases are an adrenaline rush throughout, and though the lightsaber fights aren’t nearly as dynamic as those in Lucas’ prequel trilogy, they carry just as much emotional weight—and that’s what makes them so engaging. Empire has some of the most imaginative action scenes, world-building, and character work of any action film ever made, and that’s why it’s a must-see for every fan of the genre.

‘RRR’ (2022)
India’s filmography is filled to the brim with action movie masterpieces that are often tragically underappreciated outside their country of origin, but that isn’t the case with the Telugu-language epic RRR. The most expensive Indian movie at the time of its release, this S. S. Rajamouli masterpiece attained immediate international success almost as soon as it came out, and that’s completely unsurprising to all those who have seen it.
Pure cinematic excess in the most delightful of ways, RRR is a vibrant spectacle without a single dead spot in its three-hour runtime. There’s romance, there’s bromance, there’s slow-mo, and there’s several of the most badass action sequences in all of 2020s cinema. There are musical numbers, emotional moments, and incredible performances. Basically, everything any fan of action movies could possibly want, showing that Indian cinema deserves far more love than it gets internationally nowadays.

‘The Dark Knight’ (2008)
Christopher Nolan was already well-established as one of Hollywood’s leading blockbuster filmmakers by the time 2008 came around, but what truly cemented that reputation and catapulted it into the stratosphere was The Dark Knight. Still widely recognized as the greatest superhero movie ever made, The Dark Knight is as acclaimed as it is because it’s not just a comic book movie: It’s an adrenaline-pumping action thriller with a political edge, and that’s why it has proved so timeless.
For those who love grand action sequences, The Dark Knight is famous for its epic, adrenaline-pumping set pieces relying largely on practical effects. For those who love action movies with well-written scripts, The Dark Knight has one of the most complex narratives and strongest character work of any superhero movie in history. And of course, for those who love blockbuster action movies with great acting, this one contains in Heath Ledger‘s Joker one of the best villain performances of the 21st century thus far. It truly is a “complete package” kind of cinematic experience.

‘Sinners’ (2025)
Ryan Coogler simply doesn’t miss. He’s been directing banger after banger throughout the course of his 13-year career, and his fifth movie may just be his best one yet. Sinners is far more than just the movie with the most Oscar nominations in history (with an admirable 16): It’s the greatest vampire movie of the 21st century, a genre-bending and genre-defining masterclass in making films with endless passion.
The movie shattered records at the 2026 Oscars, and it’s not difficult to see why. Thrilling and scary set pieces that make this one of the most action-packed horror films we’ve seen in years? Check. Amazing visuals and a killer score by Ludwig Göransson? Check. Romance, friendship, emotion, and one of the greatest musical numbers in the history of cinema? All check. Along with its rousing third act and exceptional cast ensemble, Sinners is one of the most impressive cinematic achievements of the 2020s so far.

‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ (1991)
With his showstopping sophomore directing effort, 1984’s The Terminator, Canadian filmmaker James Cameron established himself as a voice to look out for in action cinema going forward. Seven years later, he made a sequel that was the most expensive movie ever produced at the time of its release, and that was the movie that fully cemented his reputation as one of Hollywood’s biggest visionaries: Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Its huge and visually impressive set pieces, its revolutionary use of CGI, its amazing performances […]
Calling this one of the most thrilling action movies of all time would be an understatement. Terminator 2 isn’t just thrilling, it’s life-changing for any diehard fan of action cinema. Its huge and visually impressive set pieces, its revolutionary use of CGI, its amazing performances, and the incredible way in which all of its main characters are written—it all makes for an edge-of-your-seat cinematic spectacle that’s impossible to forget.

‘Heat’ (1995)
Michael Mann is one of the leading voices in both the action and thriller genres, but he’s no traditional popcorn blockbuster director. Instead, his films often feel more akin to what you might expect from an arthouse action movie, and never has that feeling been stronger than in Heat. Anchored by the legendary trifecta formed by Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Val Kilmer, this is a masterpiece unlike any other that action cinema has ever seen.
It’s one of those ’90s movie masterpieces that just keep getting better, a heist thriller whose slow-burning pace makes it a delightfully unique experience. Heat may be slow, but it’s never boring in the slightest, and it also packs in more than enough nail-biting sequences of suspense to keep any action fan satisfied. The acting is amazing, the characters are fascinating, the story and themes are compelling, and the actual heist sequence is one of the best in the genre’s history. What more could anyone possibly ask for?

‘Harakiri’ (1962)
There’s a reason—or many reasons, rather—why Masaki Kobayashi‘s Harakiri is the single highest-rated movie on Letterboxd. This masterpiece is far and away one of the greatest samurai movies ever made, but it’s also a thought-provoking character study about revenge, honor, and challenging authority. Supported by a legendary performance by Tatsuya Nakadai, it’s one of the best Japanese movies ever made.
The pacing is slow, but the story is so structurally unique and absolutely fascinating that you don’t even notice the 133 minutes of runtime fly right by. Emotionally stirring in its character moments and brutal in its action sequences, Harakiri is a masterclass not just in action filmmaking, but filmmaking in general. Everything about it is pretty much perfect, and that’s what makes it obligatory viewing for any and all cinephiles.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’ (2003)
Back in 2001, Peter Jackson demonstrated that not only were he and his creative team capable of delivering a masterpiece that fully lived up to the legacy of J. R. R. Tolkien‘s Legendarium, they were also capable of delivering what promised to be the greatest fantasy movie trilogy in history. That, indeed, is what ended up happening, and the 11-Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was what sealed the deal.
It’s one of the most flawless genre films in history, one of those fantasy movies that are bangers from start to finish. From its huge action scenes to its poetic character moments, from its exciting moments of emotional catharsis to its tear-jerking ending, and from its excellent performances to its faultless script, Return of the King is the kind of movie capable of making anyone go “they don’t make ’em like this anymore.”
1
‘Seven Samurai’ (1954)
Akira Kurosawa is not only the greatest and most important Japanese filmmaker in history, but also one of the most groundbreaking and influential action movie directors in history. He is, of course, best-known as the man who defined and re-defined the samurai film genre, and no masterpiece shows the reasons why better than the immensely influential Seven Samurai.
Constantly imitated but never matched, this period epic is action cinema at its very best, and a perfect gateway for those looking to get into Kurosawa, arthouse action cinema, or Japanese films. It’s exciting, it’s emotional, it’s complex, it’s thematically nuanced, and it’s masterfully made in every sense imaginable. It has great acting, great action sequences, legendary character introductions, and a fantastic ending. It’s everything that anyone could possibly want from an action flick, and then some.
