2026 has been an amazing year for TV anime so far, yet there is still much more excitement to be had in the movie department. There is a lot to look forward to regardless of your preferences, as upcoming movies this year span a host of different genres, therefore appealing to a wide range of audiences.
This year’s catalogue contains a healthy mix of standalone movies and highly anticipated sequels to popular franchises. Whether you’re trying to keep up with the latest additions to your favorite series, or looking to jump into something with a fresh new narrative, this list has you covered.
You, Fireworks, and Our Promise
Based on the light novel of the same name, You, Fireworks, and Our Promise tells the story of two high schoolers linked by a painting of fireworks. It follows their journey to uncover more about the painting and how exactly it is connected to them. It is scheduled to be released on the 17th of July.
The movie also has a focus on the Nagaoka Grand Fireworks Festival, which is one of the most famous fireworks festivals in Japan. Furthermore, fans of Makoto Shinkai and his most recent film, Suzume, can look forward to hearing the voice of their beloved protagonist, Suzume, as the female lead Hayama Aki.
To You in the Beyond
To You in the Beyond is a movie of a similar mold, where a chance encounter between a boy and a girl signals the beginning of a timeless mystery. The plot centers around the protagonist, Kazuki, as his life becomes intertwined with a girl named Nao when he finds her unconscious in a mysterious cove.
The film is also based on a light novel, though the author has stated that it will not be an exact copy of the source material. This means fans can expect some variation in events, providing some added intrigue. It is scheduled to release on the 9th of October in Japanese theatres.
Killtube
Killtube is a highly anticipated original film boasting exceptional levels of production quality on the basis of the trailer alone. It features stunning visuals with unique animation, coupled with a bright and expressive color palette. Its exact release date has not yet been specified, but there have been mentions of a spring 2026 premiere.
It is set in the present era, however it gives off an “Edopunk” vibe as a result of the persistence of the Edo period over multiple centuries. The story follows a trio of bottom-dwelling misfits and their rise to the top of a class-based society through the titular duel streaming app Killtube.
Mononoke Movie 3: Hebigami
Also set to release in the spring is the third and final installment of the highly acclaimed Mononoke trilogy. Fans will no doubt be excited for the return of the medicine seller, as peace has only seemingly returned to the Ooku, and there is still much for him to do.
Famous for its innovative style, stacked cast, and bold approach to storytelling, this finale is set to be a huge hit as long as it stays true to its core values. It’s not one you would want to miss, even if it means starting from the very first film. The movie is slated to premiere on the 29th of May.
The Apothecary Diaries: The Movie
2026 is gearing up to be a good year for fans of the Apothecary Diaries, as they are looking at waves of new content towards the end of the year. Besides the third season slated for this fall, the series will also be getting a movie, which is scheduled to premiere in December.
There are no details as of yet regarding the plot, but it has been announced that the film will feature a fresh new story written by the novel’s author, Natsu Hyūga. With the author herself in charge of the story, the audience can expect a true Apothecary Diaries experience worthy of the big screen.
Rascal Does not Dream of a Dear Friend
After receiving a steady stream of adaptations over the years, the Rascal Does not Dream series is set to end with its fourth film, Rascal Does not Dream of a Dear Friend. It is poised to conclude the journey of the protagonist, Sakuta Azausagawa, and his entanglements with different girls, as well as the supernatural phenomena surrounding them.
The movie will adapt the final two light novel volumes from which the adaptations were sourced, and it is set to air in the fall of 2026. It has been one of the longest-running romance series in recent years, and fans will surely be eager to witness the conclusion of their beloved story.
Sword Art Online: Unanswered//butterfly
Sword Art Online: Unanswered//butterfly is the latest addition to the massive Sword Art Online franchise, and it is set to be released alongside the game Echoes of Aincrad. The film will seemingly take place on the first two floors of Aincrad and will feature two new protagonists, as well as the return of fan favorites Kirito and Asuna.
While it is scheduled to release on the 10th of July in Japan, there are no plans as of yet to screen the film for overseas audiences. Additionally, it will mostly be available for fans who purchase the game, since it will not be widely released on streaming services, making access even more limited.
Witch on the Holy Night
Witch on the Holy Night is the latest in the long line of TYPE-MOON projects to be adapted by Ufotable. The movie had been announced as far back as 2021, and it seems set to finally hit the big screen sometime in 2026. It is based on a visual novel and is connected to other high-profile TYPE-MOON titles.
The events of the movie take place in late 1980s Misaki Town, centering on the relationship between resident mages Aoko and Alice, and the unsuspecting newcomer Soujuurou. It tells the story of an unlikely bond that forms between the three and the trials they face together as well as against each other.
Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery
Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery is set to pick up where the series left off in the second season, The Golden City of the Scorching Sun. It has been pegged as the first of an upcoming series of Made in Abyss films and will be released in the fall of 2026.
It has been four years since the second season aired in the summer of 2022, and now, fans will finally get to see the precious trio of Riko, Reg, and Nanachi once again. With its compelling characters, captivating scenery, and beautiful score, as further evidenced by the trailer, the film promises an emotional return to the Abyss.
Madoka Magica the Movie – Walpurgisnacht: Rising
After more than two years of delays, the eagerly awaited fourth Madoka Magica movie is finally set to premiere on the 28th of August. As one of the most popular magical girl franchises handled by a great studio with great staff, it is no doubt the most highly anticipated anime film of 2026.
This is exacerbated by the fact that it is a direct sequel to the 2013 Rebellion movie, meaning fans have had to wait 13 years for the continuation of the story. Judging from the trailers and other content received so far, though, fans can rest assured that it won’t disappoint.
