Mad Max: Fury Road Is A Non-Stop Thrill Ride
Director George Miller returned to his legendary Mad Max franchise in 2015 to change the world of action filmmaking forever with Mad Max: Fury Road. A non-stop chase through a barren post-apocalyptic wasteland, Fury Road is everything that modern action should be. Superb stunts, stunning characters, and larger-than-life action all make Mad Max: Fury Road impossible to look away from.
The simple-yet-effective narrative, incredible performances from Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, and jaw-dropping visual style are enough to get even the most jaded action hater to suddenly love the genre. It stands as the greatest action movie of the last twenty years, and one of the greatest ever made.
Die Hard Reinvented The Action Genre For Modern Audiences
The 1980s were an incredible decade for action cinema, but its greatest stars in the genre were always muscle-bound, invincible blockheads with giant guns and endless ammo. Films like Rambo: First Blood Part II, Commando, and Cobra were the standard for the genre, but that all changed with 1988’s Die Hard. The film featured a relatable, underdog protagonist in the form of Bruce Willis’s John McClane, and the setting, villains, and script all made Die Hard immediately iconic.
The film utilized a single location to its utmost, with the Nakatomi building becoming the ultimate playground for action mayhem and violence. Alan Rickman’s Hans Gruber is electric in every scene, the pace never lets up, and the superb character work mixed with the endlessly engaging setting make Die Hard endlessly rewatchable. Having crafted some of the greatest gunfights in cinema history, Woo’s work has inspired endless waves of filmmakers today, and perhaps his most influential work is the legendary Hard Boiled.
Following two cops who must reluctantly team up against a ruthless gangster, Hard Boiled utilizes a simple premise to provide audiences with some of the finest action set pieces ever made in cinematic history. Long-take hospital hallway shootouts, epic motorcycle stunts, and splendid utilization of slow-motion and repeated shots all make Hard Boiled unforgettable. It’s a masterpiece that demands viewing from all action fans, and anyone who has not yet watched Hard Boiled is doing themselves a great disservice.
Kill Bill Is The Finest Action Movie In Decades
Although it was originally released in two parts, Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill is considered by him (and by many fans) to be one singular movie. In fact, this year, Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, a re-edit of both parts cut together in accordance with Tarantino’s original vision, finally hit theaters and wowed fans around the world. With that in mind, Kill Bill stands as the finest action masterpiece of the last fifty years.

It’s an emotionally-charged action spectacle, and it’s perhaps the single greatest action movie of the last fifty years.
