It’s a wonderful and wild April for free horror movies streaming in your living room. Yes, there are 125 new repertory titles and some new titles coming to the free streaming services this month. While it is not quite Halloween, you have got so many options, and you don’t even have to pay a subscription service to get some of the best and hottest titles. Excellent.
Kanopy, the free movie service that has a truly astounding amount of films, some of which are very hard to find elsewhere. You just need two things to access Kanopy’s service: a library card and a library that is part of the service. This month, the streamer has Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s latest eerie opus, Cloud, the body horror with power tools film, Together, and Chris Stuckerman’s Shelby Oaks.
Pluto TV is being very generous, adding a total of 80 films to their library just for the month they call April Ghouls. Love it. They know what horror fans want, namely, numerous choices and plenty of films to discover, as well as franchise films to binge-watch. You can find Bryan Bertino’s lesser-known film from 2016, The Monster, the zombie horror comedy, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, which is more entertaining than it is given credit for, and Jonathan Glazer’s chilling alien invasion film, unlike any other, Under the Skin. All this and The Walking Dead Universe channel and X-Files channel running 24/7.
Tubi brings the heat with the original taboo videotape, Faces of Death, just in time for the much-anticipated release of the reboot of the film from director Daniel Goldhaber and Isa Mazzei. If you have never seen the Mondo movie and are wondering about it, this is an excellent time to bone up on your Faces of Death knowledge before the release of the Barbie Ferreira and Dacre Montgomery-starring reinterpretation is released, so you are ready on April 10.
You can also enjoy the premiere of the Tubi Original, Hive, on April 17. Xochitl Gomez (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Aaron Dominguez (Only Murders in the Building) star in this tale of a babysitter who suffers a babysitter’s worst nightmare: losing the child who was placed in your care. But more is going on, as a sinister force is revealed in the playground where she searches desperately for the child, as the young woman tries to survive as time starts running out.
You can also enjoy the stylish vampire rockstar hijinks of Queen of the Damned, The Ward, which, as a 2010 release, is the latest film by John Carpenter, Timecrimes, directed by Nacho Vigalondo, and one of horror’s most unexpected yet incredible final girls, Sharni Vinson’s Erin, in Adam Wingard’s immensely entertaining movie, You’re Next. The slasher film has a host of horror stalwarts like Barbara Crampton, Larry Fessenden, Amy Seimetz, and AJ Bowen. If you ever wanted to see Ti West act, this is your chance.
