Signs of spring continue to emerge, with maple sugaring activities and a forest walk to appreciate the changing of seasons on the calendar.

Among this week’s opportunities: Learn how to succeed in stand-up comedy, enjoy live music in a variety of genres and venues, and take in the talented “Book of Mormon” touring cast. Get whimsical at Ithaca’s Fairy Fest and or attend the theatrical “Rise from the Ashes” fashion show in Syracuse.

Seeing Eye to Eye

The eyes have it on Monday at Beaver Lake Nature Center. Participate in an educational presentation and find a community to share a love of animals with. From creatures that crawl in the forest to those that take to the sky, come learn all about animal eyes. Use your own eagle eyes to uncover the fascinating world of how different animals see the way that they do. Children of all ages are welcome.

‘The Extraordinary Caterpillar’ Screening

Ballantyne Gardens and the Liverpool Public Library are cosponsoring a screening of “The Extraordinary Caterpillar,” a short documentary that reveals the vital role caterpillars serve in sustaining our planet’s biodiversity. This event will also feature a discussion led by Lisa and Tim Ballantyne. Caterpillars help to power the native plants in our very neighborhoods, so explore the unseen stories of these little critters with other environmentally conscious community members.

Stand Up Comedy Seminar

Calling all comedy lovers: The Syracuse Actors Studio is celebrating its second anniversary on Monday at the Palace Theatre with a free standup comedy intensive. Hosted by Joey Marcus, the instructional session will also have networking opportunities for CNY’s growing theater industry. Aspiring producers, writers, directors, photographers and actors can enjoy free cupcakes and pizza while making connections and community in the comedy space. This event is open to the public.

Tuesday, March 17

McKinley James

Musician McKinley James is a 22-year-old rock-and-roll songwriter and guitar prodigy. Together with his father, drummer Jason Smay, James has been sharpening his sound over the course of countless shows, from Nashville dive bars to European headlining gigs. This week, James will perform at the 443 Social Club, backed by Smay. Heavily influenced by traditional blues and soul, James takes older styles of music and makes them his own.

Climate Literature Discussion Group

Join a community-led conversation about climate change at downtown Ithaca’s Buffalo Street Books. This group meets on the third Wednesday of every month; March’s title is novel “The Unworthy” by Argentinian writer Agustina Bazterrica. Shop the bookstore for 10% off titles the group reads. “The Unworthy” explores themes of extremism, ideology, grief, survival and the search for tenderness in a dystopian, brutal world.

Fit for an Autopsy

New Jersey band Fit for an Autopsy, which sings metal hits like “Black Mammoth,” is coming to The Song & Dance in downtown Syracuse as part of their It Comes for You tour. The deathcore group describes themselves as grappling “with the horrors that the human race has unnecessarily inflicted upon the world.” Special guests Quantifier and Slum Lord also will perform. Fans of heavy metal bands like Lamb of God, Mastodon and Deafheaven will appreciate Fit for an Autopsy’s mathematically precise riffs and classic death metal noisiness. This show is for ages 16+, with guests under-16 admitted with a legal guardian.

Syracuse Songwriting Music Series

Embrace the unexpected at this monthly songwriters’ series, hosted by Syracuse’s Pink Rock Culture Co-Op. Regional, touring and local singers will join in a Nashville-style round-robin, which allows three artists to trade off licks, lyrics and songs at the same time. If you have been searching for a local deep-dive into the songwriting process and love seeing how the sausage gets made music-wise, this event is for you. Each concert showcases multiple singer-songwriters’ original music. Thursday’s event features Brian Modafferie, Betty White Devil and Spencer Bradshaw.

‘Healing Forward’ Artist Talk

Explore Amber Robles Gordon’s artwork on ritualistic healing and community building during Gordon’s talk at the Community Folk Art Center. Through her visual art featured in the exhibition “Healing Forward,” Gordon discusses self-repair and the complex relationship between collectivism, perspective and spirituality that occurs throughout community cultivation and healing. The showcase aims to bring together assemblages, quilts, collages and installations made over the course of a decade.

Hiroya Tsukamoto

Brewerton Center for the Arts welcomes back Berklee College of Music-trained musician and songwriter Hiroya Tsukamoto Friday evening. Tsukamoto brings masterful fingerstyle guitar playing and evocative storytelling that transcends cultural barriers. He will showcase his artistry as he performs songs from his newest album, “Rainshadow,” in an intimate concert.

‘Book of Mormon’

The musical about Mormon missionaries who find themselves in a warlord-ravaged region of Uganda is currently touring North America and will be stopping by Syracuse’s Landmark Theatre this weekend. From the creators of “South Park,” the nine-time Tony Award winning comedy is outrageous, witty and thoroughly unforgettable. Follow the merry misadventures of a poorly matched pair of missionaries, sent halfway across the globe to spread their religion. Please be aware that “The Book of Mormon” contains explicit language. Children under 4 will not be admitted. Additional shows through March 22.

Maple Syrup Celebration Weekend

Learn how maple syrup is made at Critz Farms this weekend. Bring your boots for a tour of the nature trails, tour the Sugar House, observe the sap collection or take a wagon ride through the fields to the maple sugarbush. A Kiddie Corral and Slide Mountain children’s play area will be open weather permitting. The Tap Room will be open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. while the all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Fairy Fest

Businesses throughout downtown Ithaca are opening their doors for the return of the enchanting Fairy Fest Saturday. Hosted by indie toy shop Alphabet Soup, the day includes imaginative activities and experiences including crafts, story time, workshops and magical treats. Fairy, unicorn, elf or magical creature attire is encouraged at this family-friendly event.

DisruptHER Commons

DisruptHER Commons is a village-square–style gathering for women leaders, by women leaders being held at the McCarthy Mercantile. The goal is to provide access to meaningful conversations, practical support, skill sharing and a community of other women in a relaxed atmosphere. The Commons is built around five pillars: health, style, work, wallet and brand, and more than 20 curated vendors will offer services, expertise and hands-on experiences. The event supports People on Purpose Inc., which helps fund local, woman-led organizations creating economic impact across our region.

Forest Bathing: Spring Equinox

A guided forest walk (and at times not walking) at Great Swamp Conservancy Saturday will help ring in the spring and represent renewal and new beginnings. Shinrin yoku, or forest bathing, honors the cyclical nature of life and helps you experience nature with all your senses. June Leo-Randazzo, an Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT) Certified Guide, will lead the walk. Event is for ages 14+.

Welcome to Spring Hike

Join the Green Lakes Environmental Education Center on their Welcome to Spring hike, which invites beginners of all ages to appreciate the changing seasons. Celebrate the start of springtime with a hike through their Old Growth Forest. Expect to walk about four miles on steep-to-moderate terrain. Make sure to dress appropriately for the weather, wear sturdy walking shoes and bring plenty of water. Hikers will meet at the Environmental Education Center.

‘Rise from the Ashes’ Fashion Show

The magical world of designer Laura Marino is coming to Palladian Hall’s grand ballroom. “Rise from the Ashes” is a fantasy-inspired runway showcase that includes aerial performances and celebrates community. The event will benefit In My Father’s Kitchen, which provides necessities and food for Syracuse’s homeless community. Black tie attire is required to attend this final collaboration between Marino and lead makeup artist and co-producer Alexandra Axenfeld.

Liz Longley

On Saturday afternoon, spirited singer-songwriter Liz Longley will grace Oswego Music Hall’s McCrobie Civic Center stage as part of their spring 2026 season. The critically acclaimed folk vocalist, currently living in Nashville, is touring her 2025 album, “New Life.” Longley, a recipient of the John Lennon Songwriting Scholarship Award, dealt with postpartum anxiety and depression, so her new music is about “relearning how to do things with a new human around.” Longley is known for her blend of folk, pop and Americana; Cam Caruso opens.

‘Sleeping Beauty – The Ballet’

The Studio for the Performing Arts Ballet Company presents a performance of “Sleeping Beauty” at Smith Opera House in Geneva. Experience the familiar story as it unfolds with elegant music, beautiful choreography, stunning costumes and fairytale wonder. The SPA Ballet Company is a professional dance company celebrating thirty years. A second performance takes place on March 22 at 2:30 p.m.

‘Symphonic Dances’

Acclaimed violin and flute-playing duo Maria Millar and Shawn Wyckoff are the featured artists at Syracuse Orchestra’s Pops series in the Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theatre on Saturday. The ensemble will perform songs from “Fiddler on the Roof” alongside a showcase including Millar’s original work and Camille Saint-Saens’ “Bacchanale.” Plus, this might be the only classical music concert in CNY that will feature a Daft Punk song.

KJ & LoLo: Unplugged

Project OutLoud will host KJ & LoLo: Unplugged Saturday night at Funk ‘n Waffles. This R&B trio delivers rich harmonies and soulful performances reminiscent of ‘90s R&B groups. SMX Band, Shamiek Thomas and Malichi Simmons will also perform. The concert’s proceeds benefit ACR Health. The event will include free on-site HIV and STD testing along with community job resources from partnering health care organizations. Project OutLoud is an initiative emphasizing intersectionality and fostering dialogue around race, gender identity and queer culture in ways that challenge stigma and promote inclusion.

She Sessions Music Series

Celebrate Women’s History Month by enjoying the musical series She Sessions at Lunkenheimer Craft Brewing Company. This month-long live music showcase shines a much-needed spotlight on outstanding women performers in CNY. Sunday, listen to the pop, soul and R&B sounds of Amanda Ashley, a Rochester-based songwriter and musician. The series uplifts women’s voices through community gathering and joyous music in a family-friendly, warm environment featuring craft beer, wood-fired pizza and more.

MasterWorks 60th Anniversary Concert

MasterWorks Chorale will be hosting their 60th anniversary concert this Sunday at C.S. Driver Middle School, featuring “Requiem” by Gabriel Fauré, which will be performed with a chamber orchestra. Additional works by Randall Thompson, Léo Delibes, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Fauré to be sung as well. The ensemble, now based in Skaneateles, returns to Marcellus where it was founded.
