1
‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’ (1999)
Rotten Tomatoes: 85% | IMDb: 7.4/10
A movie nominated for an impressive five Oscars, although it sadly walked away without a single prize, Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley is a psychological thriller following Manhattan lavatory attendant, Tom Ripley (Matt Damon), as he cons his way into the life of Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law). However, little does Dickie expect that Tom will become dangerously attached to both him and his lifestyle.
Based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel of the same name, The Talented Mr. Ripley is a stunning, intense film that would become a big inspiration for the recent viral movie Saltburn. Alongside Damon and Law at their best, the film also boasts superb supporting turns from the likes of Cate Blanchett and Philip Seymour Hoffman. This is the perfect way to get you in the Oscars mood.
2
‘Frankenstein’ (2025)
Rotten Tomatoes: 85% | IMDb: 7.4/10
There is no better way to celebrate this weekend’s 98th Academy Awards ceremony than with one of the films vying for the Best Picture prize. The long-awaited adaptation from Guillermo del Toro, Frankenstein, based on Mary Shelley’s groundbreaking original text, follows a titular unconventional scientist who pushes the boundaries too far when bringing a monstrous experiment to life and leaving the world in danger. But who is truly evil: monster or creator?
Frankenstein is a visually stunning gothic horror that emphasizes its performances as much as its style. The performances themselves are hugely impressive, led by Jacob Elordi as the Creature and Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, and featuring Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, and Lars Mikkelsen in supporting roles. Frankenstein has received a huge nine nominations at this year’s ceremony, and will likely take home a couple of the technical prizes.
3
‘Blue Moon’ (2025)
Rotten Tomatoes: 90% | IMDb: 6.8/10
Richard Linklater‘s latest project, Blue Moon, is another of the nominees from this year’s Oscars, although only in two categories. The ever-brilliant Ethan Hawke has been nominated for Best Actor for a performance some have even called his career-best, with Blue Moon also earning a Best Original Screenplay nod for writer Robert Kaplow.
The movie stars Hawke as lyricist Lorenz Hart as he struggles with alcoholism and mental health on one pivotal night. On the historic 1943 opening night of Oklahoma!, Hart is forced to watch his longtime partner Richard Rodgers (Andrew Scott) triumph during a new, acclaimed creative chapter with Oscar Hammerstein. Alongside Hawke and Scott, the film also stars the likes of Bobby Cannavale and Margaret Qualley.
