‘About a Boy’ (2002)

Rotten Tomatoes: 93% | IMDb: 7.1/10

In 2025, you might have seen Nicholas Hoult in James Gunn‘s hugely successful Superman. In 2026, take yourself back to the actor’s major breakout role at just 11 years old alongside Hugh Grant in About a Boy. An adaptation of the 1998 novel by Nick Hornby, the film follows Grant’s Will, a man who unapologetically attends single parents’ meetings to try to hook up with women. Instead, he discovers a charming, bullied young boy named Marcus (Hoult), and the two begin an unlikely and heartwarming friendship.

Also starring the ever-brilliant Toni Collette in one of her most underrated performances, About a Boy is a gem from the golden age of charming British dramedies. On its surface, the movie seems like another canvas for Grant to paint his bumbling gentleman character onto yet again. However, under the surface is an emotionally poignant tale of coming-of-age that will leave your heart full.

‘Alien: Romulus’ (2024)

Rotten Tomatoes: 80% | IMDb: 7.1/10

The dawn of 2026 brings with it a selection of exciting new arrivals on Prime Video, one of which is director Fede Álvarez‘s Alien: Romulus, a film cited by some as the savior of the classic sci-fi horror franchise. Going back to the series’ roots, the film follows a group of young space colonists as they encounter the universe’s most terrifying threat aboard a derelict space station.

Featuring a cast packed with impressive up-and-coming Hollywood talents, including Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, and Isabela Merced, Alien: Romulus pays perfect homage to the genius that came before it, whilst also feeling as if the franchise is being pushed in a fresh direction. A breathless tale of survival that will have you hooked throughout, this is perhaps the best way to breathe adrenaline-fueled life into your 2026.

‘Straight Outta Compton’ (2015)

Rotten Tomatoes: 89% | IMDb: 7.8/10

Before the genre wore thin for many theatergoers, the musical biopic was arguably at its best with the release of 2015’s Straight Outta Compton. The movie depicts the brief but impressive life of the pioneering rap group NWA (Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, MC Ren, and DJ Yella) as they broke new ground in the hip-hop genre out of Compton in the mid-1980s.

Featuring stellar performances from O’Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Neil Brown Jr., and Aldis Hodge, and smart direction from F. Gary Gray, this fascinating tale of one of music’s most important rap groups leaves no stone unturned. Nominated for just one Oscar despite being considered one of the very best musical biopics of this century, Straight Outta Compton deserves much more love.
