It’s been 3 years since John Wick: Chapter 4 hit theaters, and ever since, people keep asking if the allegedly dead action hero will be back. Now, yeah, we’re thinking he’s back, and not in the way some fans may think. During today’s PlayStation State of Play event, Lionsgate and Saber Interactive officially unveiled the first look at its currently untitled John Wick video game, and it’s just as glorious as fans of Keanu Reeves‘ action hero were hoping for.
The action-packed trailer begins with some pre-rendered footage, bringing the unique crime universe of Chad Stahelski‘s blockbuster series to life in spectacular fashion. We get to see the Baba Yaga in all his glory, followed by his signature “yeah,” which certainly sounds a lot like The Matrix star himself. Finally, the trailer ends with a proper look at some brutal gameplay as John takes on the deadliest foes in this vast criminal underworld.
While the trailer certainly showcases Keanu Reeves’ likeness, it’s currently unknown if he’ll return to voice the character in the upcoming game or if he’ll be recast, similar to how Troy Baker played Harrison Ford‘s titular hero in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. However, fans will be happy to hear that longtime John Wick director Chad Stahelski is creatively involved with the project. Saber Interactive, the game’s developer, is also a positive sign, as the company has a proven track record in licensed video games and has two additional titles in development: the single-player survival games Hellraiser: Revival and Jurassic Park: Survival. An official synopsis for the game reads as follows:
“Created in collaboration between Saber, Lionsgate, and franchise director Chad Stahelski, the new ‘Untitled John Wick Game’ will feature an original script set in the John Wick timeline, expanding on the franchise’s intricate lore with familiar characters fans already know, as well as completely new ones. Saber’s design will be faithful to the unique style and signature elements of the series, including a distinct gun fu combat system, jaw-dropping camerawork, immersive driving experiences, and a variety of memorable environments, all crafted to make players feel like they are in a John Wick movie, playing the role of John Wick himself.”
What’s Next for the John Wick Universe?
Getting to fill John Wick’s shoes is a dream come true, but that’s not the only thing fans have to look forward to. Even though the franchise’s first theatrical spin-off, Ballerina, performed below expectations at the box office, Lionsgate is still eager to explore the franchise further, including a new spin-off following Donnie Yen‘s Caine. Also in development is an animated prequel that will focus on John completing his infamous “impossible task” that earned him his freedom before the first film. Finally, it’s been confirmed that John Wick: Chapter 5 will happen eventually, though work on it likely won’t begin until Chad Stahelski finishes his commitments on his long-awaited Highlander remake with Henry Cavill.
