When we seek an escape from our reality, we often turn to movies that are out of this world. No, literally. Science fiction has been a universally beloved genre because it allows us to escape from now and head somewhere else. Perhaps it’s through a film in a future far from ours. Maybe it’s watching our favorite superheroes save the day. Whatever it is, sci-fi has opened up our imaginations to what the future could hold.
If you’re like me, you likely stare at your Prime Video home screen for a long time, unsure what to watch next. ‘Companion’ (2025)
Easily one of the most underrated films of 2025, Companion is a reminder that maybe our desire for an AI-driven universe may not be what it’s all cracked up to be. Written and directed by Drew Hancock, Companion follows a weekend getaway in which Josh (Jack Quaid) brings his AI companion, Iris (Sophie Thatcher), as the truth about her existence and his manipulative nature unravels, leading to dark twists, violence, and explorations of consciousness, control, and humanity’s darker side. A robot experiencing an existential crisis, the dark thriller may appear like your average, typical relationship drama, but as Iris earns sentience and fights for freedom, she questions what it means to be alive.
An absolute banger of a film, Companion introduces a perfect blend of science fiction elements with camp idiocentracies that make the film hauntingly authentic. Companion could easily be what our future looks like in the realm of companionship. The entire ensemble plays well in Hancock’s world, with special mention to Thatcher and Lukas Gage as Patrick, who gets to riff in both worlds. Though the title essentially tells you where the film is headed, Companion’s use of jarring imagery and tone makes for an anxiety-inducing watch. It’s a sleek film that knows exactly what it’s meant to do. A thoroughly entertaining film, it’s a fervent addition to the ever-growing AI filmography.

‘Edge of Tomorrow’ (2014)
Very soon, Emily Blunt will get to explore the science fiction world with Steven Spielberg as her guide in the upcoming Disclosure Day, but until then, the perfect sci-fi film to wet your whistle is 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow. Starring Blunt and Tom Cruise, the film follows Major William Cage (Cruise), a public relations officer with no combat experience, who gets trapped in a time loop during a war against unstoppable aliens called Mimics. Every time he dies in battle, he relives the same day, allowing him to learn from his mistakes and improve his skills. Eventually, he teams up with elite soldier Rita Vrataski (Blunt) to find a way to defeat the alien invaders by targeting their central intelligence, the Omega. Groundhog Day, but make it science fiction, Edge of Tomorrow is a gripping action saga that pushes you to your extremes of determination.
Inspired by Hiroshi Sakurazaka‘s All You Need Is Kill, the film is a smart, action-packed thriller in which victory comes through experiencing death, as grim as that sounds. Using video game logic, Edge of Tomorrow is poignant and, at times, funny, with Cruise carrying the film on his shoulders. As a bona fide action star, Edge of Tomorrow is a typical Cruise blockbuster, just with a space-aged theme. If repetition is not your forte, this could be a tedious watch, but if you love battle scenes that go kaboom, Edge of Tomorrow satisfies your every desire.

‘Mickey 17’ (2025)
If you’re still stuck with the idea that Robert Pattinson is and will forever only be Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga, think again. 2025 brought Pattinson back to the silver screen in Bong Joon Ho‘s sci-fi black comedy Mickey 17. Based on the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, the story, set in 2054, follows a man who joins a space colony as an “Expendable,” better known as a disposable worker who is cloned every time he dies. When Mickey 17 seemingly dies but returns, the colony prints Mickey 18, creating two identical Mickeys vying for existence amidst class struggles, corporate control, and alien threats. With themes of identity, death, and survival, Joon Ho’s distinctive vision made it one of the year’s best films.
Set on harsh, hostile ice planet Niflheim, where humans struggle for survival and clash with native species, Mickey 17 looks and feels like a brilliant science fiction film, but the humanity that both actor and director infuse into the story brings forth an excellent story that integrates an array of styles, from slapstick comedy to absurdism with hints of horror tossed in for good fun. A strong exploration of the dehumanization of our future, Mickey 17 is elaborate in scale and fantastical in scope. The cast, which also includes Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Steven Yeun, Micky 17 is a film that must be seen before the ball drops on New Year’s Eve.

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ (2017)
You may be surprised to learn that you don’t need Disney+ to watch some of the best entries in the MCU. One such masterpiece is Tom Holland‘s first solo turn as Peter Parker in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. Rather than exploring the hero’s origin for the third consecutive franchise, the Jon Watts-directed film brings us into Peter’s daily life as he tries to balance high school and saving the day as Spider-Man. A true coming-of-age film, Spider-Man: Homecoming fits perfectly into the established MCU, even becoming one of the best films in the entire filmography.
With Michael Keaton returning to the superhero universe as Adrian Toomes, aka Vulture, Marisa Tomei taking on a younger iteration of Aunt May, and Robert Downey Jr. coming in as Tony Stark, the mentor, the adults certainly have their fun, but it’s the teens in this MCU film that are the future. The MCU version of Spider-Man introduces Zendaya as Michelle, also known as MJ, as well as Jacob Batalon as Ned, two of Peter’s best and closest friends. Before you criticize me, I grew up with Tobey Maguire in the lead role and was forced to accept a change with Andrew Garfield. Hands down, Holland is the best Peter Parker ever. If you want to see why, this is the perfect way to start your adventure.
