If you’re staying home on New Year’s Eve, one of the best ways to send 2025 off into the sunset is with your Netflix subscription.
Netflix has such a wide variety of films to choose from that almost anyone can find something fun to watch on any day of the year.
To narrow things down, Watch With Us has selected the five best Netflix movies to watch on New Year’s Eve.
Our picks include a rom-com starring Justin Timberlake, a ’90s romantic fantasy featuring Brad Pitt, a sci-fi adventure, a disaster film and a horror flick.
‘Friends with Benefits’ (2011)
It’s understandable if you’ve ever confused Friends with Benefits with No Strings Attached. The latter stars Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, and it came out seven months before Friends with Benefits. Both films have very similar themes, but this one stars Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis as a pair of professionals who become close friends.
Dylan Harper (Timberlake) and Jamie Rellis (Kunis) decide to start a casual sexual relationship without crossing over into an actual romance. The problem with that approach is that they become so important to each other that no one else seems to do for them. There are some very serious roadblocks ahead of any real relationship between the two. And if Dylan and Jamie aren’t careful, they’ll let each other slip away.
Friends With Benefits is streaming on Netflix.
‘Meet Joe Black’ (1998)
The 1934 film Death Takes a Holiday is the basis for Meet Joe Black, a romantic drama with a touch of fantasy. Near the end of his life, media mogul Bill Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) receives an offer he can’t refuse from Death itself. In exchange for Bill’s guidance, Death will allow him to spend a few additional days on Earth to finish his affairs and say his goodbyes.
To explore the mortal realm, Death takes on the form of Joe Black (Brad Pitt), a young man who has never experienced what life has to offer. Joe quickly falls for Bill’s daughter, Susan Parrish (Claire Forlani), and the feeling is mutual. But loving Death may prove to be hazardous, as he wants to take Susan with him to the afterlife when he leaves his Joe Black persona behind.
Meet Joe Black is streaming on Netflix through December 31.
‘The Adam Project’ (2022)
Ryan Reynolds teams up with himself — sort of — in The Adam Project. In the future, time travel is real, and Adam Reed (Reynolds) is determined to change the fate of his wife, Laura Shane (Zoe Saldaña). To prevent Laura’s murder, he travels back in time and finds himself facing his much younger self, as played by Percy Jackson and the Olympians star Walker Scobell.
The two Adams realize that their real enemy is Maya Sorian (Catherine Keener), a woman who is collaborating with her future self to control time travel and ensure their shared wealth and power. To stop Maya’s agenda, the Adams will have to reunite with their father, Louis Reed (Mark Ruffalo), a man who died years before Adam and his younger self met in the present.
The Adam Project is streaming on Netflix.
‘Dante’s Peak’ (1997)
Sometimes the best way to ring in the new year is an old-fashioned disaster flick. Dante’s Peak features former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan as Harry Dalton, a volcanologist who is emotionally scarred by a close call that took the life of his fiancée, Marianne (Walker Brandt). Years later, Harry is sent to Dante’s Peak, Washington, to investigate unusual seismic activity.
Of course, it turns out to be a prelude to a volcanic eruption near a small town. That’s the appeal of these disaster flicks, after all. Before that happens, Harry gets close to Dante’s Peak’s mayor, Rachel Wando (Linda Hamilton), and her children. Once the volcano becomes active, Harry and the Wando family desperately attempt to escape the destruction before it’s too late.
Dante’s Peak is streaming on Netflix.
‘Until Dawn’ (2025)
Until Dawn doesn’t wait long to dispatch its entire cast of leading characters, only to bring them back and do it over and over again. Ella Rubin leads this horror flick as Clover, a young woman whose sister, Melanie (Maia Mitchell), has gone missing. To find her, Clover has brought together her ex-boyfriend, Max (Michael Cimino), and their small circle of friends. But all they discover is an early grave at the hands of a killer.
Upon awakening in the next cycle of a time loop, Clover and her friends find themselves targeted by a new threat. As each cycle repeats, nothing plays out exactly the same way. But unless they find a way to break the loop, they may be trapped in an eternity of suffering.
Until Dawn is streaming on Netflix.
