5 easy ways to style winter’s biggest trends

Winter may be the season of practical dressing, but fashion has never been one to hibernate. As temperatures drop, style is taking a turn toward the theatrical — reviving old icons and remixing familiar nostalgia and modern trends together. From the sudden return of military jackets that recall peak-2009 pop culture, to sailor caps that feel plucked straight from a Jean Paul Gaultier daydream, this winter’s trends are anything but quiet. Preppy polos are getting a subversive twist, belts are no longer accessories but full-blown statements, and feathers are floating their way from the runway to real life.

Consider this your ultimate how-to guide on reviving your wardrobe, looking cool and providing inspo this winter. Scroll on to read more.

The military jacket marches back

What comes to mind when you picture a military jacket? For me, it’s hard not to think of Cheryl Cole’s 2009 ‘Fight For This Love’ music video, where the sharply tailored red coat and the glint of gold braiding spawned a thousand copy cats.. It was dramatic, structured, and honestly, it makes perfect sense that these types of jackets are marching back into our wardrobes right now. With indie sleaze creeping its way back into the zeitgeist, and early-2010s fashion suddenly feeling more rosily nostalgic than cringey, the military jacket’s silhouette and statement detailing fit right in. The key to styling them is balancing their structure with something softer or more casual. Throw one over a simple tee and slouchy jeans for an effortless everyday look, or pair a cropped version with high-waisted trousers to keep the silhouette modern. If your jacket leans ornate — gold buttons, epaulettes, embroidery — let it be the statement and keep the rest minimal.

It feels like Halloween never fully ended, because sailor hats have been popping up everywhere. Even during those costume-filled weeks, the look seemed reserved for the cool, niche fashion crowd – the girls, gays, and theys who always know what’s next. Maybe this sudden wave is again tied to a bit of 2010s nostalgia, echoing Jean Paul Gaultier’s flirtatious take on the sailor aesthetic. And while it may seem like a statement accessory, it’s easier to style than you’d think: pair a sailor hat with a striped knit, oversized blazer, or even a clean white tank and wide-leg denim to keep the look playful but grounded.

Polo shirts aren’t just preppy anymore

Polo shirts used to feel strictly preppy, right? Maybe ten years ago — but not anymore. Thanks to the Luca Guadagnino’s 2024 film Challengers and the influence of Miu Miu, in addition to the help of Lorde and Hailey Bieber consistently wearing the silhouette, the polo has shifted into a cooler, more subversive territory. Cropped versions give the look a flirty ‘spring break’ edge, while oversized polos worn with pleated minis or low-rise trousers nod to that tennis-core energy without feeling literal.

Belts are the outfit

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen oversized belts as a major fashion statement — mid-00s boho chic practically revolved around chunky brown leather styles with gold hardware. But today’s iteration feels sharper and more sculptural. These belts aren’t just accessories; they are the entire outfit. On the spring/summer 2026 runways at Zomer, Enfants Riches Déprimés, Chloé and beyond, they cinched everything from fluid dresses to deconstructed tailoring. But the easiest way to wear them now? Let the belt be the focal point: layer it over a slightly loose shirt and low waisted trousers, or pair one with a simple knit dress and boots.

Feathers are the flirty detail you need

It makes sense that feathers are having a particularly charming moment. Lingerie-inspired dressing is all over the global runways and street style, so delicate details like ruffles and feather trims feel like a natural next step. They add instant movement and softness, whether dusting the hem of a slip dress or accenting a cardigan or bag. The key to styling feathers now is subtlety: pair a feather-trimmed piece with clean lines and minimal accessories so the texture can flutter and shine without tipping into costume territory.
