Back in 1965, 20th Century Fox released the award-winning musical, The Sound of Music, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The film was beloved by many, including Pope Leo XIV, and its soundtrack remains iconic to this day. Now, fans can relive this musical, as The Sound of Music has released a limited-edition 4K Ultra HD physical copy.
The Sound of Music 4K: 60th Anniversary Edition set is now available for purchase online for $39.99, but it has reportedly dropped to $33.19. This physical release contains three discs: the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray copies, and a sing-along version. Additionally, there are bonus features, including commentary by Andrews, Plummer, other cast members, and the film’s director, Robert Wise. Also included are three photo cards from scenes in the movie.
The Sound of Music follows Maria (Andrews), a free-spirited woman who becomes a governess for Captain Georg von Trapp (Plummer), a widowed father with seven children who were raised under strict military discipline. At first, these children were not keen on Maria’s presence, but eventually they came to get along as she introduced warmth and music into their lives. At the same time, she slowly develops feelings for Georg von Trapp. The film is based on the 1959 musical of the same name, and it became a massive success, earning a Certified Fresh 83% critics’ score and a 91% audience score, and grossing over $161 million at the box office.
How ‘The Sound of Music’ Proved Its Timeless Appeal
Following its theatrical release, The Sound of Music received numerous accolades, which includes winning 5 out of 10 Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Director, Film Editing, Musical Score, and Sound. The film is known to have the longest theatrical run, playing in cinemas for years. According to the BBC in 2016, the sing-along version shown at the Prince Charles Cinema in London has continued to attract moviegoers, with fans dressed as the characters. Not to mention, the soundtrack has charted in multiple countries, peaking at #1 on the U.S. Billboard 200, and has received Gold and Platinum certifications in a handful of countries.
Since then, some of the songs have found new life, with “My Favorite Things” being covered by numerous artists, like Christina Aguilera, and was interpolated in Ariana Grande‘s 2019 hit, “7 Rings.” Meanwhile, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” was performed on reality TV shows like The Voice and Australian Idol, as well as by other performers like Barbra Streisand.
