Yesterday, February 8, a memorial service was held at the Church of Saint Alexander of the Greek Community in Lusaka, Zambia, in honor of Greece’s national poet, Dionysios Solomos.
During the event, a message from Metropolitan Ioannis of Zambia, delivered on behalf of Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa, emphasized the enduring significance of Solomos’s work for Orthodoxy and Hellenism, as well as their spiritual legacy.
The Consul General of Greece, Michail Krupnik; the President of the Greek Community of Lusaka, Georgios Liakopoulos; and the Greek language teacher, Rania Tsirigoti, delivered greetings. They emphasized the importance of preserving the Greek language, history, and cultural identity within the diaspora.
Professor Ioannis Karras of the Ionian University delivered the day’s commemorative speech, underscoring Dionysios Solomos’s literary work, spiritual contributions, and role in shaping the national consciousness of the Greek people. Professor Karras also emphasized the importance of the Greek language in forming and maintaining the identity of Greeks living abroad.
The ceremony continued with the laying of wreaths before the bust of the National Poet and concluded with the playing of the national anthems of Greece and Zambia in an atmosphere of respect and unity.
The Greek Community of Lusaka continues to honor Greek history and cultural heritage, keeping the memory of great Hellenic figures alive.
