The 2026 NBA trade deadline has come to an end. The last day for teams to make trades was Feb. 5. We saw multiple stars traded and a few teams that made some head-scratching decisions. This trade deadline has been an exciting one and will provide an exciting finish to the NBA season.
The Washington Wizards, Utah Jazz and Indiana Pacers all emerged as surprising teams that were looking to make moves this trade deadline. All three traded for big-name players. The Washington Wizards were able to pull off an eight-player trade on deadline day to bring in Anthony Davis. Having traded for Trae Young a month prior, Davis was brought in to create a dynamic duo for the team. Unfortunately, this duo might not see the court together this season, as it is unclear if Davis will be cleared to come back from injury.
The Utah Jazz and Indiana Pacers have a combined record of 29-76, and decided it was time for things to change. Both teams splurged, giving up a combined five first-round picks, as the Jazz brought in Jaren Jackson Jr. and the Pacers traded for Ivica Zubac. Both of these big men are expected to help their teams reach the playoffs next season. There are many questions around this Utah trade about how Jackson Jr. will be able to fit into an already stagnant offense which struggles to score outside of a brilliant scoring night from Keyonte George which happens once or twice a week. For the Pacers this trade was a no brainer with Zubac being a cheaper replacement for Myles Turner they were able to keep the pick top 5 protected meaning they will essentially lose nothing if they land inside the top 5 of the lottery this summer.
Arguably the most groundbreaking trade was made by the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Clippers. After James Harden shockingly announced he wanted to be traded out of a Los Angeles Clippers organization who has the best record in the NBA over the last 20 games, Wednesday, Feb. 4, his request was honored and he was traded to Cleveland in a swap for Darius Garland. This trade signals that the Cavaliers believe they can win a championship in the near future and marks the start of a rebuild for the Clippers. The Cavaliers also traded away Deandre Hunter and Lonzo Ball, moving on from their three worst-rated net players. The Cavaliers are seen as the ultimate winners of the trade deadline as they make a push to climb the standings in the Eastern Conference.
One team that left fans confused was the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls made a total of seven trades over six days. Eight players were traded away from Chicago, including Coby White and Nikola Vucevic, who are viewed by many as their two of their best players. After all these trades, the Bulls roster left has no players taller than 7 feet. A guard-heavy roster does not give Chicago a great chance of competing in the East and it looks like they are bound for another lottery pick.
This trade deadline reflected the new financial atmosphere in the NBA. Harsh financial penalties of the aprons and a league-wide desire for younger players saw teams mix up their strategies when making trades. Teams are no longer looking to add borderline all-star players who are making close to $50 million a season. A player with a big contract is most likely to only gain interest from a team that is well below their salary cap.
