Casino Salem at the Mall at Rockingham Park will close March 9 as owner Churchill Downs transforms the property into the Rockingham Grand Casino, which is set to open next year.
The Louisville-based company announced the plans last month, but with no mention of the possible closing of Casino Salem to make way for the $180 million to $200 million project.
The decision to close the casino during the renovation and expansion was not made lightly, according to recent social media posts. Leaving the smaller-scale operation open during construction would significantly lengthen the construction timeline.
The casino will close at 1 a.m. March 9, according to the company.
