Greece has to support Ukraine, says foreign ministry

Greece had to stand in support of Ukraine after it was invaded by Russia in 2022, considering the country’s position on the inviolability of borders, Greek Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Lana Zochiou said on Tuesday.

Zochiou was responding to criticism by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov who used a recent briefing on Moscow’s foreign policy for 2025 to target Athens over decisions taken to support Kyiv and Ukraine’s armed forces. He cited agreements on co-producing naval drones and Greece’s participation in the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List.

“Greece could not but side with the party defending itself,” she told journalists at a regular press briefing. Lavrov’s statements “are nothing new, nor are they statements that take us by surprise.”

Zochiou said relations with Russia were “at a satisfactory level” until 2022. “Of course, we take into account what was said by the Russian foreign minister. We seek to preserve good relations with Russia and we wish, in the future, when conditions allow, for relations to be restored,” she added.
