The white silk organza gown featured a fitted bodice with short lantern sleeves, embellished all over with delicate flowers. A voluminous skirt bloomed from the low hip, and the hem was trimmed in delicate lace. A long veil wafted behind the bride, attached to a hair bow. Caroline Kennedy completed her bridal style with a bouquet of white calla lilies and teardrop-shaped pearl earrings. The dress was so well-received that Carolina Herrera released her first bridal collection the following year.
At the end of the ceremony, nearly 400 guests traveled to the ocean-view compound belonging to Kennedy family matriarch Rose Kennedy. Rose, then 95 years old and using a wheelchair, was Caroline’s grandmother. She celebrated alongside Caroline’s brothers John F. Kennedy Jr.—who served as the best man at the wedding—and Ted Kennedy. Her cousin. Maria Shriver, who married Arnold Schwarzenegger just months before, was her maid of honor, and two other cousins were bridesmaids.

Among the guests were several politicians who had been aides when her father was in the White House, such as Ted Sorensen, Dave Powers, and Richard Goodwin.

The mother of the bride, of course, also sported an elegant look. Jackie Kennedy chose a simple dress in pastel green with exaggerated shoulders, accessorized with white leather gloves and oversized earrings in the shape of a flower.
