Aphrodite Latinopoulou, leader of the party Voice of Reason, proposed establishing closed migrant centres on the uninhabited islands of Gyaros and Makronisos and assigning forced labour to people who entered Greece illegally.
Latinopoulou made the comments during an interview on the programme 15 Minutes with journalist Giorgos Papachristos, where she described migration as an “invasion” and framed it as an existential issue for Greece and Europe.
She accused the Greek government of ignoring the situation and alleged that an organised system of financial interests sat behind migration flows. She also criticised NGOs, the European Union, and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis personally.
Latinopoulou described migration as a threat to national security and social cohesion. She said migrants should be transferred to closed facilities on uninhabited islands and should only leave through deportation procedures.
She also called for an end to welfare benefits, housing support, and free accommodation for people entering the country illegally.
In the same interview, Latinopoulou said she had asked the European Parliament to reconsider the death penalty for “heinous crimes” and for human smugglers.
She claimed Europe suffered from illegal migration and blamed European Union policies for allowing Islam to enter European societies. She argued that Europe needed strong nation states rather than states “full of illegal migrants and Islam.”
Latinopoulou said authorities should conduct sweeping operations across Greece and isolate irregular migrants in closed centres. She also said the state would provide food and water, while requiring migrants to perform work on the islands, including agricultural labour.
