A bout of unsettled weather that left a significant amount of damage in its wake after sweeping into Greece on Wednesday is forecast to continue through Thursday and Friday, with heavy rain, thunderstorms and gale-force winds.
The National Meteorological Service warned that a fresh wave of storms will affect the country, with the entire region of the Peloponnese being placed under a “Red Code” flooding alert through Friday.
The warning also covers western Greece, including the Ionian islands of Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Ithaca, where forecasters predict strong storms and possible flooding.
Storms have already caused problems in some parts of the country, with torrential rainfall on Wednesday triggering landslides, rockfalls and road collapses in western mainland areas like Preveza and in the western Peloponnese.
Fire service crews received dozens of calls to pump water from flooded homes and businesses, while municipal teams worked to clear debris and restore traffic on major roads, including along the Patra-Tripoli national highway, where a section of the road subsided near the village of Divri, disrupting travel and supplies. Power outages were also reported in parts of Pyrgos in Ilia.
In the greater Athens area, heavy rain caused a stream in Pikermi to overflow, temporarily halting traffic, while road collapses and debris led to closures in the Polygono district. Authorities urged drivers to exercise caution as many roads remain slippery.
