LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — International Day of Women and Girls in Science is drawing attention to the push for more women and girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math, including in Nevada’s mining industry, where women make up only a small share of the workforce.
Wednesday, Feb. 11 is International Day of Women and Girls in Science, an observance that highlights the need for equitable access and full participation of women and girls in STEM careers.
In Nevada’s mining sector — one of the state’s most prevalent STEM industries — women currently represent roughly 13% of the workforce, underscoring what advocates describe as room for growth as the industry evolves with new technologies and increased demand for critical minerals.
Amanda Hilton, president of the Nevada Mining Association, is being highlighted as a local spokesperson to discuss how mining can offer STEM opportunities for young women and girls in Nevada. As president of the association, Hilton represents thousands of jobs tied to mining and the innovation connected to industries ranging from high-tech manufacturing to clean-energy solutions.
Hilton also has firsthand experience building a STEM-focused career in a traditionally male-dominated field and has advocated for expanding opportunities for women across Nevada’s economy, including in modern mining careers that can be relevant for students considering STEM pathways.
