Report shows 4-year decline in crime in town of Greece

The town of Greece says 2025 stands out as one of the lowest crime years in modern history.

A newly released four-year overview of crime and enforcement trends shows the total index crime declined sharply in 2025 from previous years for the Greece Police Department.

GPD Chief Michael Wood notes a brief regional spike in vehicle theft in 2023, which he says has stabilized since then.

“Over the past few years, our community experienced a sharp but temporary increase in property crime driven almost entirely by a regional spike in stolen vehicles,” said Wood in a statement. “That spike was real and disruptive, but it was not permanent. In 2025, crime in the town of Greece stabilized and returned to levels that align with long-term historical patterns.”

Four-Year Overview — 2022–2025:

  • 2022: Crime remained historically low, with serious violent crime near its lowest levels in years. Property crime increases were driven primarily by larceny
  • 2023: The town experienced an unprecedented spike in motor vehicle thefts, more than doubling any annual total recorded in the prior 45 years. Stolen vehicles accounted for nearly one-quarter of all reported index crimes
  • 2024: Auto thefts and overall property crime began to decline as targeted enforcement, regional coordination and public awareness efforts took hold
  • 2025: Total crime declined significantly, motor vehicle theft returned to long-term norms, and serious violent crime remained rare

Enforcement Effectiveness and Arrest Rates

In addition to reductions in reported crime, the Greece Police Department says it had notable gains in case closures and arrests during 2025, even as crime declined:

  • Robbery: Arrests exceeded reported incidents, reflecting cases involving multiple offenders and the clearance of cases originating in prior years
  • Burglary: Arrest rates reached 68.2%, the highest level in recent years
  • Larceny: Arrest rates remained strong at 48.1%, a category traditionally difficult to clear due to volume and offense type
  • Motor Vehicle Theft: Arrest rates climbed to 50.8%, a dramatic improvement following the regional auto-theft surge of prior years

The report adds that there were no homicides last year, while it also stood as one of the highest arrest rates in recent years.
