Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano has agreed a new contract through to 2030.
The 27-year-old has been a mainstay in Bayern’s team since his 2021 transfer from RB Leipzig, with his existing contract set to expire at the end of the season.
“We’ve got a great team and a great coach.” Upamecano said after extending his deal. “We’ve got big goals together.
“In life, it’s always about mentality. I give my all for my team-mates, in every training session, want to keep a clean sheet in every game and want to win as many titles as possible with Bayern.”
The France international has won six trophies during his spell in Munich including three Bundesliga titles, and this season has formed a central defensive partnership with Jonathan Tah — who arrived from Bayer Leverkusen this summer.
Bayern are currently top of the German Bundesliga, six points clear of second-place Borussia Dortmund and finished second in the Champions League league phase table, securing automatic qualification for the last-16 phase.
Upamecano improvement significant
Analysis by Sebastian Stafford-Bloor
No player has improved more under Vincent Kompany’s coaching than Upamecano. In that sense, it’s not a surprise that his own extension has followed his coach’s (signed in late 2025) and that he has been happy to bind their futures together.
Go back a few years and Upamecano was a punchline in Munich. He was treated extremely roughly by the German media, with every mis-step and mistake seized upon as evidence that he was not up to playing for the country’s biggest club. Some of that criticism was reasonable, parts of it went above, beyond and into murky territory.
But over the past 18 months he has unquestionably been Kompany’s best centre-back — even since German international Tah joined Bayern on a free transfer from Leverkusen in the summer of 2025. Upamecano is still proactive and aggressive in his defending, but the timing of his interventions has improved dramatically.
Crucial, because that tendency — his willingness to jump up and out of the defensive line — was so often the root of Upamecano’s issues pre-Kompany. Now, as seen for Luis Diaz’s goal against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League this campaign, the Frenchman’s proactive decisions are even helping to create chances at the other end of the pitch.
Maybe once he was seen as a weak link, or as another reason behind the drop in Bayern’s defensive standards. Now, without question, Upamecano is the backbone of what, once again, has become a really formidable side.
So, a great success — for the player, the coach and for the club, too, for whom the €42.5million spent to sign him from RB Leipzig in 2021 now looks like money very well spent.
