WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Students from across Texoma gathered Friday at Midwestern State University for the fourth Red River Regional Science and Engineering Fair, showcasing weeks of research projects and competing for a chance to advance to international competition.
The annual fair, held inside the Clark Student Center, featured rows of tri-fold boards filled with data charts, research findings and carefully tested hypotheses. Elementary, middle and high school students presented original projects to judges, with middle and high school participants hoping to move on to the international stage.
Behind each display was a student driven by curiosity and long-term goals.
“I want to actually do forensics,” one student said.
“I’m going into the dental program,” another said while explaining their project and future aspirations.
Projects ranged from engineering solutions to environmental research. A group of high school students from Burkburnett focused on agriculture, reflecting their community’s rural landscape. Their experiment measured chloride and nitrate concentrations in soil samples from vegetated areas versus bare spots.
Judge Blane Boswell said the fair gives him confidence in the next generation of scientists and engineers.
“It takes me back in time, you know, because these kids are putting together these displays, and it’s it makes me excited to see the next generations are coming up and doing things that look better than what I think I would have done as a kid,” Boswell said. “So it makes me feel good that the future’s bright.”
While some students are motivated by the possibility of winning and advancing, many said the experience is about discovery, asking big questions and exploring careers in science beyond the classroom.
Organizers say the fair not only highlights academic achievement but also encourages students to pursue long-term interests in science, technology and engineering fields.
