8 Spring Fashion Trends to Avoid—and 8 to Wear Instead

It’s hard to believe, but spring is just weeks away—and now is a great time to breathe new life into your wardrobe. If you’re looking for guidance on how to update your clothes, bags, and accessories, we spoke to five fashion stylists about the outdated spring trends on the way out—and what pieces we should wear instead.

Stylists say bold, joyful hues are replacing neutral tones this spring. Other trends they’re seeing are color blocking, silk and lace, and mix-and-match outfits. Here are some of the top trends they’re predicting, and how to dress for each one.

Don’t Do: Monochromatic

“Uniform, neutral fits without a pop are feeling dated,” say celebrity stylists Elana and Dina Solomon of Stylishly Solomon. “The mood now is expressive color contrast and statement hues, rather than subdued, match-everything pieces.” The Solomons recommend this sleeveless, color-blocked two-piece set, which is dramatic without feeling over the top.

Don’t Do: Frilly Bows

“What isn’t trending anymore is the overly done bow detail,” says Tannya Bernadette Moore, founder of The Closet Edit. “The fresh update is refined femininity with a modern edge,” Moore says. Try satin lace tanks layered over denim—or satin bloomers, like these ones, styled with an oversized tee. “The shift is less about adding cute details and more about choosing pieces that can be styled in a less cute way,” she says.

Don’t Do: Pale Denim

Distressed, light-wash denim had its moment, but stylist Corinne Pierre-Louis says this casual style is making way for dark-wash and deep indigo denim—like the “shaded view” wash of these Levi’s wide-leg jeans. “It feels more elevated, versatile, and surprisingly fresh for spring, when styled with the right top,” she says.

Don’t Do: Neutral-Toned Bags

“Neutral bags have had their moment,” says stylist Karima El-Hakkaoui. “Now it’s about sleek, brightly colored designs with clean lines that add energy without overwhelming your outfit.” El-Hakkaoui recommends this polished yet playful clutch, which converts into a shoulder bag by attaching the chain strap. It’s a quick and easy way to add pop to your outfit.

Don’t Do: Subdued Details

Subdued prints and accessories are not as popular this spring, says fashion expert Alisha Karmakar. Instead, she recommends “playful, classic prints” like this skirt, which draws the eye with a bold color and mini polka dots. “It’s a fun nod to rising dot trends,” she says. If you want to make a statement in smaller ways, try skirts with asymmetrical hems.

Don’t Do: Quiet Neutrals

“Spring 2026 is all about color with personality, not subtle fade-into-your-closet neutrals,” say Elana and Dina Solomon. “Spring color stories for 2026 lean into joyful, expressive hues like cerulean, vibrant blue, lime, purple, tomato red, and other saturated shades.” Even just a pop of bold color can make a huge impact, such as these blue statement earrings.

Don’t Do: Matchy-Matchy Sets

It’s tempting to go the matchy-matchy route if you’re looking for a safe top-and-bottom combination, but Pierre-Louis says coordinated sets are losing their appeal. Instead, have fun layering and mixing. She suggests mixing florals with stripes, or bold solids with graphic prints—like this graphic T-shirt paired with pants in a fun print. “The focus is on personality and contrast,” she says.

Don’t Do: Mini Bags

Totes never go out of fashion, but Pierre-Louis says they’re especially popular this spring as an alternative to “ultra-mini micro-bags that barely hold the essentials.” The emphasis is on totes that are practical and functional, but she’s also been noticing oversized and sculptural bags—for example, this hobo bag with an especially dramatic dip.
