Greece has launched a preservation plan for the Unknown Soldier Tomb to maintain one of its most iconic monuments. This development follows recent legislative shifts transferring oversight to the Defense Ministry.
Historical Background of the Monument
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier serves as a cenotaph dedicated to unnamed Greek war casualties. Sculpted by Fokion Rok between 1930 and 1932, it features a relief of a fallen soldier. Unveiled on March 25, 1932, during Eleftherios Venizelos’ government, the monument draws on ancient traditions, such as Pericles’ empty bier for missing warriors. Therefore, it links modern Greece to its classical past.
Additionally, the site lists battle names from the Balkan Wars to the 1974 invasion of Cyprus. Guarded around the clock by Evzones, the presidential unit attracts tourists for the hourly changing of the guard. However, ongoing use as a protest venue has prompted the implementation of protective measures.
Legislative Changes Prompting Action
In October 2025, Greece’s parliament passed amendments assigning management of the monument to the Defense Ministry. This shift aimed to enhance security and ban protests at the site. Consequently, the government rejected opposition claims of unconstitutionality. For example, Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis described it as upholding a “supreme national symbol.”

The group will discuss preservation strategies for the Unknown Soldier Tomb.
