HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – In celebration of Valentine’s Day, the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra took to the streets of Honolulu on Saturday.
The symphony performed free live concerts throughout the city, dubbed “Music From the Heart,” to spread its love of music.
“It’s a gift to the community to bring attention to everything that the orchestra does,” said Norman Foster, who plays the Clarinet for the HSO.
Each group performed popular themes, from “Star Wars” to “Harry Potter,” while also teaching audience members about each instrument they were playing.
“It’s really great, because often in the concert hall, the audience is way out there, and the lights are dim, and you can’t really see the audience or engage directly,” Foster said, “but in a situation like this, we can, and so it’s important to have that personal interaction.”

The orchestra is also seeking support ahead of Tuesday’s hearing of House Bill 1764.
HSO said the bill would provide funding to expand access to public concerts, music education opportunities, and community programming across the state.
Lawmakers are also considering a renewed proposal that aims to designate the HSO as the official State of Hawaii Symphony Orchestra.
The deadline to submit testimony for HB 1764 is 2 p.m. Monday.
