There’s a new development in Nintendo’s fight against Switch emulators as we’re hearing that the company has issued DMCA notices to every emulator and fork on GitHub.
Eden, Citron, Kenji-NX, and MeloNX are all affected. Even projects like Sudachi and Skyline, which are no longer active, were hit with DMCA notices as well. While repositories are still online, that likely won’t be the case soon.
A lot happened with Nintendo and Switch emulators in 2024. Initially, the company sued the creators of Yuzu, but the two sides later reached a settlement. Discord servers for emulators Suyu and Sudachi were taken offline that same year. If that wasn’t enough, Nintendo put an end to Ryujinx.
In the aftermath of 2024, new forks like Citron and Eden came about. Now it looks like Nintendo’s in full force in taking down emulators where possible. The company only wants fans legally playing Nintendo Switch games on their hardware and has taken issue with technological protection measures (TPMs) circumvention, which include cryptographic keys in the console itself that are used to decrypt games. Although the keys aren’t bundled with Citron or Eden, their existence alone was enough to set off Nintendo.
Despite Nintendo’s latest actions, the likes of Citron and Eden have their duplicated repositories on private servers. However, their removal from GitHub can make it more difficult for the emulators to be found.
