Sorry if I’m late to the party on this one, but sometimes it takes a Game Pass deep dive while you are looking for something to play on your handheld PC to find an absolute gem. I am so glad I did, because now I am officially obsessed with Back to the Dawn.
Developed by Metal Head Games and published by Spiral Up Games, this isn’t your typical “run-and-gun” indie title. It is a meticulously crafted, anthropomorphic prison escape RPG that feels like a cross between Prison Break and a high-stakes tabletop session. It’s a game I tried to see how it would run and stayed for the obsession that it instantly builds.
The social hierarchy is visually and mechanically distinct; you might find yourself negotiating with a sophisticated, silver-tongued feline in the library one moment, and facing down a scarred, intimidating grizzly bear in the exercise yard the next. Each species seems to lean into its natural traits, wolves often hunt in packs within their gangs, while solitary reptiles might offer a cold, calculated path to survival. Whether they are feathered, furred, or scaled, every inmate has a backstory that feels earned and a personality that makes the prison feel like a genuine community rather than just a backdrop.

Life on the Inside
The social hierarchy is governed by three powerful gangs. You are faced with a constant dilemma: do you join a crew for protection, or do you play the “lone wolf” and manipulate the scene from the shadows? The character growth system is surprisingly deep. You can focus on being a “tough guy” who uses strength to intimidate, a “thief” who masters the art of lockpicking and stealth, or a “smooth talker” who can talk their way out of a solitary confinement stint.

The Great Escape(s)
The beauty of Back to the Dawn lies in its freedom. This isn’t a linear path to the exit. There are dozens of ways to break out, through the infirmary, the sewers, or even across the rooftops. There’s over 100 handcrafted quests creating the “daily grind” of prison life with laundry duty, gym sessions, and cafeteria trades. These never feel like a chore because every action is a potential stepping stone to your freedom.
The narrative is massive, boasting a script of over 500,000 words. It is rare to see an RPG of this scale maintain such high tension throughout, but the ticking clock of your execution or the city’s impending doom keeps the pressure on.

The Verdict
The pixel art style is gorgeous and runs like a dream on the Lenovo Legion Go S. It’s a game that rewards patience, creativity, and a bit of moral flexibility. I love the animal characters and the RPG elements are handled brilliantly, as someone who loved growing up playing table tops there is something just magical about rolling dice to achieve a goal, give me more of that!
If you haven’t checked it out yet, stop scrolling through your library and just start your sentence now. You won’t regret it.
