Meghan Markle just broke a major fashion rule – and proves how chic this colour combination can be

Having posted a sweet Valentine’s Day tribute to her family, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, enjoyed a night out with Prince Harry over the weekend. Attending the 75th NBA All-Star Game in Inglewood, California, the pair looked happy and relaxed as they smiled for the cameras, sitting next to Queen Latifah, no less. Meghan stuck to her favourite style combination for off-duty events: a cashmere knit, her favourite Veronica Beard jeans and a pair of Aquazzura boots. Interestingly, she paired her navy jumper with black denim, defying an age-old fashion “rule” that the two colours shouldn’t be worn together.

The now-outdated rule that navy and black shouldn’t be bedfellows has been ignored by some of fashion’s best dressed for a while now, with many consciously choosing the combination in a bid to keep outfits simple but chic. This, after all, is the personal style Meghan has carefully cultivated over the last few years; she has, in many ways, been one of the poster girls for quiet luxury, choosing understated pieces in sumptuous fabrics from some of the world’s most exclusive brands.

In this case, her knit is from Brochu Walker, an LA-based sustainable label renowned for its luxurious take on minimalist dressing. It’s not the first time Meghan has displayed a preference for ethically-made knitwear – she has previously worn several styles, like this Another Tomorrow jumper that she chose for an episode of With Love, Meghan.

In terms of accessories, the Duchess of Sussex kept things similarly minimal. She wore the Cartier pieces she loves, choosing them for most of her public appearances: the Juste un Clou Torque necklace and her Love bracelet.

While the spring/summer 2026 trends suggest that quiet luxury is fading out of favour, Meghan continues to prove that, when you’ve found the style formula that works for you, it’s a good idea to stick to it.
