The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) is celebrating 30 years of promoting excellence in science and ensuring that research serves society in South Africa and across the African continent.
Established in 1996, ASSAf has evolved into a respected voice in national, regional and global science arenas. Over the past three decades, the Academy has convened leading scholars, produced influential consensus studies, strengthened African scholarly publishing, and championed evidence-based policymaking.
Through its work, ASSAf has positioned science at the centre of addressing critical development challenges, including climate change, public health, technological change and inclusive economic growth. The Academy operates at the intersection of science and society, ensuring that research findings inform public policy and contribute to sustainable solutions.
“Thirty years is more than a milestone — it is a moment to reflect on our collective achievements and to renew our commitment to the future,” said Prof Himla Soodyall, Executive Officer of ASSAf. She noted that the Academy’s impact is anchored in the diversity and expertise of its Members and partners, as well as its mission to harness science for societal benefit.
Over the years, ASSAf has provided independent scientific advice to government and other stakeholders, enhanced the visibility and quality of African research, supported emerging scientists, and advanced science diplomacy and international collaboration. The Academy has also been at the forefront of promoting open science and responsible innovation.
Looking ahead, ASSAf says it will continue strengthening South Africa’s national system of innovation, deepening global partnerships, and ensuring that science remains a catalyst for inclusive and sustainable development.
As it marks three decades, the Academy reaffirms its commitment to advancing knowledge in service of the public good — a mission that remains as urgent today as it was at its founding.
