Persistent severe weather swept across large parts of the country on Tuesday, causing significant disruption, particularly in western Greece, as a third consecutive wave of rainfall battered already strained areas.
Two hillside settlements on Mount Taygetos were evacuated after buildings and roads gave way. Yard walls collapsed and additional damage was reported to local roadways. The settlement of Machalas in Alagonia faced the most serious problems.
On the island of Corfu, landslides and sinking ground created problems across the road network.
On Wednesday, the regional governor of the Ionian Islands and the island’s three mayors are scheduled to travel to Athens to meet with Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis Kostas Katsafados at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection to discuss possible interventions and immediate funding.
In Agnanta, in the Epirus region, landslides were also recorded as a result of intense rainfall. The situation regarding landslides there is currently described as controlled, according to accounts.
Meanwhile, in the Louros area, continuous heavy rains caused river levels to rise, turning the plain into a “lake.”
In Ilia, the village of Mazaraki in the municipality of Ilida remained cut off due to a landslide triggered by the severe weather. The landslide front exceeded 700 meters, beginning at the entrance to the settlement.
Authorities are monitoring the area closely and have warned residents to avoid the affected zones. Emergency crews are standing by to provide assistance as soon as access is restored.
