During the presentation of credentials by Greece’s new ambassador to the United States, Antonis Alexandridis, U.S. President Donald Trump described Greek-American relations as “stronger than ever.”
In his official remarks, Trump emphasized that the bond between Greece and the United States is “strong, historic, and rooted in a shared democratic and spiritual heritage,” adding that he looks forward to further deepening bilateral cooperation.
The president highlighted Greece’s progress toward meeting NATO’s 5% of GDP defense spending target, noting that Athens is demonstrating “true leadership” within the Alliance. “Peace is secured through strength,” he stressed.
Turning to energy, Trump pointed to growing exports of American liquefied natural gas to Greece and referenced the Vertical Corridor initiative, saying these infrastructure projects will bolster energy security across the broader region.
He also praised Greece’s decision to abstain from adopting the International Maritime Organization’s net-zero emissions framework. According to Trump, the proposed regulation would impose heavy costs on consumers, businesses, and global trade.
In addition, he spoke about prospects for expanding cooperation in the shipbuilding sector, including discussions on constructing American frigates in Greece. He underlined the importance of further strengthening trade and investment ties between the two countries.
During the meeting, Trump asked Ambassador Alexandridis to convey his “warm greetings” to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, reaffirming the importance of continued close collaboration between the two governments.
He concluded by expressing his deep admiration for Greece and his desire to visit the country.
The credentialing ceremony officially marks the beginning of Alexandridis’ tenure in Washington at a time when Greek-American relations are expanding strategically and economically.
