Greece’s Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou has met with Saudi Arabia’s Industry and Mineral Resources Minister Bandar bin Ibrahim Al-Khorayef to discuss strengthening strategic energy relations between the two countries.
The meeting focused on the progress of the “Saudi-Greek Interconnection” project, described by the Greek ministry as an energy bridge between the Middle East and Europe that will enhance Greece’s role as a regional energy hub.
The two ministers also explored cooperation prospects in the hydrogen sector, including Greece’s potential role as a gateway for transferring Saudi hydrogen production to European markets within the framework of the “South East Europe Hydrogen Corridor” initiative.
Papastavrou highlighted the “constant upgrading of the bilateral strategic relations of Greece and Saudi Arabia in the energy sector,” according to the ministry.
The sides agreed to further strengthen cooperation within the existing Strategic Dialogue between the two countries. The Greek ministry reminded that the first meeting of the Supreme Council for Strategic Cooperation between Greece and Saudi Arabia took place in January 2025 in Al-Ula, co-chaired by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman.
Minister Al-Khorayef invited the Greek Environment and Energy Ministry’s leadership to attend the 5th Future Minerals Forum, scheduled for January 13 to 15, 2026, in Riyadh. The invitation was accepted.
The Greek ministry said the meeting concluded in an excellent atmosphere, with Papastavrou emphasizing the ongoing enhancement of bilateral strategic relations in the energy sector.
