The Detroit Pistons lead the NBA’s Eastern Conference, and the New York Knicks sit in third place, and they square off Thursday at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks (35-20) have won 21 of 28 games at home this season and get to host Detroit after two big road losses to the Pistons earlier this season. The last meeting was a 118-80 rout, but New York knocked Detroit out of the playoffs in six games last season. Detroit (40-13) has a 5.5-game lead on the Boston Celtics in the East, with the Knicks an additional game behind. New York is a 4.5-point favorite in the Pistons vs. Knicks odds and is covering in 67% of the SportLine Projection Model’s simulations, good for a “B” grade. Knicks -180 on the money line gets a rare “A” grade, as they win 77% of the time.
Other NBA picks with “A” grades include Over 216.5 in Rockets vs. Hornets, hitting at a 63.4% rate, and Over 228.5 in Suns vs. Spurs, which comes in 61.7% of the time. The Celtics take on the Golden State Warriors in an intriguing cross-conference battle, and the model also has an “A” on the Over in that one. The total is set at 212.5 in the Celtics vs. Warriors odds, and Over hits in 68% of the model’s simulations. Golden State (26-23) is fighting for a playoff spot despite key injuries, and Stephen Curry (knee) will be out but Kristaps Porzingis will make his debut with the team. The Celtics are 35-19 but are 5.5-point underdogs Thursday, and the model has them covering the spread in 54% of simulations and winning outright 65% of the time.
