It’s been a disappointing opening stretch to the season for the Orlando Magic and its newly acquired guard Desmond Bane. And after Orlando’s star forward Paolo Banchero missed multiple key free throws that coughed up the Magic’s late lead against the Portland Trail Blazers, the Magic were potentially on the verge of another crushing loss.
Bane was in the midst of another tough shooting night, shooting just 8 of 18 from the field and 0 of 5 from deep. The Magic had made just seven of their 29 3-pointers.
But Bane had his first crowning moment in Orlando in the game’s final seconds. He drilled a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to secure a 115-112 win against the Trail Blazers on Monday night at the Kia Center.

Bane caught the ball off an inbounds pass on the right wing, rose over elite wing defender Toumani Camara, and knocked in the triple. His teammates mobbed him in celebration after the play.
It was a brief respite from Bane’s miserable start to the year. Bane, who the Magic traded multiple picks this offseason, began the season averaging just 14.2 points per game on 43 percent shooting from the field and 29.3 percent from 3.
The 3-pointer came after Banchero missed three free throws in the game’s final minute that would have secured the win. Instead, on a night where the Magic’s glaring offensive issues flashed again – they shot only 26.7 percent from three and had 13 turnovers – their big offseason pickup changed the team’s fortune on the game’s last play.
