Calls for police chief, VP of finance to resign after SC State shooting

South Carolina State University faculty are calling for the removal of two major positions at the school following the recent fatal on-campus shooting.

On Thursday morning, a university spokesman confirming to WACH Fox News that the university’s faculty senate sent SC State President Alexander Conyers a letter requesting the school’s Vice President of Finance Gerald Smalls and Chief of Police Richard Johnson to step down.

Johnson was appointed Chief of Police in May 2024, following a career as a SLED agent. Smalls started his role as the school’s VP of Finance back in August 2022, and is a South Carolina State alumni.

The demand comes after two deadly shootings on campus in four months, both happening at Hugine Suites.

This week, SLED charged 18-year-old Khamanti Kennedy with murder in connection with last Thursday’s shooting, that killed 19-year-old Henry Crittington and 18-year-old Terrell Thomas, and wounding an SC State student who remains in the hospital.

WACH Fox News has also reached out to SLED for the latest on the investigation into last week’s shooting. Those questions are listed below:

  • Was any of this incident in self defense?
  • Is there any information on who shot the victims, was it Kennedy or the student still in the hospital?
  • Will the victim with injuries be charged with self defense when he gets out of the hospital?
