1. Urchin (Hulu)

Babygirl and Triangle of Sadness hunk Harris Dickinson wears his influences on his sleeve in his directorial debut – namely, Mike Leigh and the Safdie brothers – but he does right by them in this impressive first outing. A slice of life about the cycle of poverty and addiction, it’s helped mightily by a powerful performance from Frank Dillane, best known for portraying Tom Riddle in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, here showing a ton of raw, damaged soul as a street kid consistently let down by the system, and himself. One of 2025’s great surprises. Read Time Out’s review.

2. Rental Family (Hulu)

Mononymous filmmaker Hikari takes a sharp left turn from her last major directorial effort, helming multiple episodes of Netflix’s acclaimed Beef, with this sweetly sentimental – and sometimes just purely sentimental – domestic dramedy. Brendan Fraser is an American actor living in Japan who takes a gig with a company that provides surrogates for strangers in need of filling some sort of void in their lives. (A real thing, apparently.) When he’s assigned to act as a father for a young girl, his feelings naturally grow complicated. Read Time Out’s review.

3. The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants (Paramount Plus)

SpongeBob Squarepants is really the ultimate in family entertainment, equally appealing to kids, stoned teenagers and stoned parents. In this fourth cinematic adventure to the depths of Bikini Bottom, our porous hero embarks on a mission to find the ghost pirate known as the Flying Dutchman, voiced by Mark Hammill, aka Luke Skywalker.

4. Dead of Winter (HBO Max)

Emma Thompson gets the Taken treatment in this action-thriller. She’s a recent widow spreading her late husband’s ashes at his favourite isolated ice-fishing spot when she comes across a couple (Judy Greer and Marc Manchaca) holding a young woman hostage, making her both a target and the woman’s only hope. Luckily, she possesses a certain set of skills. Well, not really. But she is quite resourceful.

5. The Astronaut (Hulu)

A sci-fi horror flick that largely evaded attention during its theatrical run, this perfectly fine jump-scare–a-thon stars Kate Mara as an astronaut who returns to Earth from a botched mission and discovers some…thing may have hitched a ride back with her. Laurence Fishburne is around, too, which is always welcome.
