We spoke with Travel Guru Michelle Newman about Tarpon Springs

You don’t need a passport to experience Greece in our own back yard, Tarpon Springs is a thriving Greek community on Florida’s Gulf Coast keeping their Greek heritage, culture, and traditions alive. Travel Guru Michelle Newman tells us more.

Tarpon Springs is the sponge capital of the world, and they originally recruited a large number of Greek people to gather sponges due to their existing skills. Thus, creating a Greek community of immigrants that grew into a beautiful place that still holds its heritage of upmost importance. People still gather and sell natural sponges throughout Tarpon Springs.

There is gorgeous architecture no matter where you go, and there are lots of historic buildings. You’ll feel like you’re in Greece especially because of the food. They have large portions all over and everything is delicious! Most recipes are family recipes that are highly protected, so you won’t get it anywhere else!

The church is also incredibly important, the St. Michael shrine is beautiful and you can see orthodox celebrations that are still practiced today.
