Civic Symphony of Green Bay combines music and art for concert and auction at The Weidner

GREEN BAY (WLUK) — Music and art took center stage Friday at The Weidner, as the Civic Symphony of Green Bay performed in conjunction with an art auction.

The event was aptly named “Brushstrokes & Bowstrokes.”

“Our auction was inspired by one of the pieces we’re playing tonight called Pictures at an Exhibition. We thought it would be really fun to bring our arts community together and present music with art,” said Rose Van Himbergen, fundraising committee chair for the Civic Symphony of Green Bay.

The pieces were brought to life by professional and amateur artists across Northeast Wisconsin. The proceeds from the auction will help the Civic Symphony continue to host events like their “Music for Young Listeners” concert Friday morning, in which 1,650 young students from area schools packed The Weider as part of a field trip.

“We do this performance for the children because we want to encourage musicians of the future to join us,” said Van Himbergen.

Lynn Liddle-Drewiske, education committee chair for the Civic Symphony, added, “We have the kids come in because this is a wonderful way to introduce them to the symphony, if they haven’t seen one before, or just to let them have more fun with the symphony. It’s a very kid-friendly concert.”

She said the schools are given an education guide and activities to go along with the songs that are performed.
