5 fantasy shows and movies in development that already feel absolutely epic

It’s an exciting time for fans of the fantasy genre. After years of subpar releases and crushing cancellations, like The Wheel of Time, there are several big fantasy shows and movies in active development and right around the corner that we can’t wait to watch.

Unfortunately, some of these projects are a year away—or more in some instances. Thankfully, we already have great fantasy shows to watch in the meantime. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which wraps up its first season on Sunday, Feb. 22, is delightful, and crushing, new Game of Thrones prequel. It’s based on George R.R. Martin’s series of novellas about Dunk (Peter Claffey) and Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell).

HBO just released the House of the Dragon season 3 teaser and revealed the new season premieres in June 2026. We’ll also, hopefully, see The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3 premiere sometime later this year or early 2027. That’s right around the time we’ll see the first season of Harry Potter premiere on HBO Max, as well.

So, as you can see, there are several big fantasy projects with release dates soon. We’ll be waiting a little bit longer for six more fantasy shows and movies in the works, but I guarantee they will be worth the wait when they finally arrive.

Let’s get the list started with another Game of Thrones spinoff!

Aegon’s Conquest

Aegon’s Conquest is the project that Game of Thrones fans are waiting for. Listen, I love A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon as much as the next person, but Aegon’s Conquest is so interesting to me. It has the potential to be bigger and better than anything based on Martin’s works so far. It’s going to be gruesome, terrible, and wonderful.

The project, which is being developed by Mattson Tomlin, who wrote the screenplay for Batman 2 with Matt Reeves, will tell the story of Aegon Targaryen, also known as Aegon the Conqueror, during his takeover of Westeros. The series is set more than 100 years before the events of House of the Dragon.

Unfortunately, we don’t know much about who is going to be in it or when it’s going to be released. There have been some reports and rumors that it might be a movie. Others suggest it’s going to be a show. We don’t know that yet, but we do know that it will be awesome. It’s imperative that HBO get this project right.

There are a few other Game of Thrones spinoffs reportedly in the works, but this is the one with the most potential, in my opinion.

Fourth Wing

Speaking of projects that the creative team needs to get right, Fourth Wing, which is the first book of The Empyrean book series by Rebecca Yarros, is officially in the works at Prime Video. Meredith Averill, who has been an executive producer on hits, like Wednesday, The Haunting of Hill House, and Locke and Key, will be the showrunner of Fourth Wing.

For those who don’t know, the series is set at Basgiath, a war college, where cadet Violet Sorrengail begins her first year and begins her journey defending her home against those who wish her people harm. Oh, and she does so with the help of dragons.

Michael B. Jordan is a producer for Fourth Wing, and he recently spoke to Deadline about how the show is progressing.

“We are making sure that this is going to be a exciting show that delivers on all of the things the fans want and some of the things that they won’t be expecting either. But trust me, I know how beloved this franchise IP is and we’re diligently… We’re in the lab, we’re cooking up. We got it. It’s coming. It’s early stages, but I feel how much people care about this one. It’s not lost on us.”

These books are so popular. Whenever this show premieres, it’s going to be the talk of the industry. There will be so much hype, and that’s a scary thing, but there’s just so much potential for a show like this with the romance, fantasy, and most importantly, dragons blending together into something really special.

Mistborn

Fans have been waiting for years to find out if Brandon Sanderson‘s Cosmere books would ever be turned into TV shows or movies. Sanderson has been very open about the challenges of making those things happen in the past, but it looks like he and Apple are in the process of overcoming those challenges. Apple officially ordered a Mistborn movie in January 2026, and Sanderson revealed he’s already working on the screenplay for the film.

There are three books in the first era of the Mistborn series, starting with The Final Empire, which follows a group of thieves with powers trying to overthrow an evil ruler. While it has not been revealed, the general consensus is that those books will be turned into movies, but this is the start of a, hopefully, long partnership.

The Stormlight Archives

We’re not done talking about Sanderson just yet! In addition to the Mistborn movies, Apple also ordered a TV series based on The Stormlight Archives books by Sanderson. The five-book series begins with The Way of Kings.

I haven’t totally made up my mind, but I think it makes sense to develop Mistborn as movies while keeping The Stormlight Archives as a TV series. There’s definitely Game of Thrones potential with The Stormlight Archives, and that’s super exciting. I can’t wait to see the world get to see this story on screen.

The most interesting wrinkle of all of this is that Sanderson is keeping a significant amount of creative control over the projects. We don’t know the specifics yet, but The Hollywood Reporter mentioned that George R.R. Martin and J.K. Rowling don’t even have as much of a say in these projects as Sanderson will have at Apple. That’s going to be something to watch moving forward.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum

Last but not least, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is a feature film directed by Andy Serkis, who played Smeagol/Gollum in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The movie is scheduled for a theatrical release on Dec. 17, 2027. We have quite a while to wait, but I think it’ll definitely be worth it by the time it arrives!

There’s some debate about what the film is about, but a recent report from TheOneRing.net shared a leaked synopsis for the film. The synopsis explains that the film basically follows Smeagol’s life story, before and after he comes in contact with the Ring. It also follows Aragorn’s journey to find Gollum before he’s captured by the forces of Mordor, and that happens before he leads Frodo, Sam, Pippin, and Merry to Rivendell and forms the Fellowship of the Ring.

Production is supposed to start on The Hunt for Gollum soon. We’re also expecting cast updates to find out who is playing these legendary characters.

Stay tuned for more information about these projects. We’ll share more news about other fantasy shows and movies in development as we find out.
