Greece, and Thrace in particular, is transforming into an international energy hub, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has said during a visit to the newly operational natural gas compression station in Komotini.
“The compression station substantially increases our capacity not only to supply the domestic network but, more importantly, to export greater quantities of natural gas to our northern neighbors,” Mitsotakis said.
He emphasized that the facility enhances Greece’s strategic role in the so-called “vertical energy corridor,” enabling the supply of gas – including US liquefied natural gas (LNG) – to countries such as Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Slovakia and Hungary.
The premier noted that the recent visit by a large US delegation underscored Greece’s pivotal position in regional energy supply. “Our country has proven in practice that it can conduct highly effective energy diplomacy, always to the benefit of our national interests,” he said, praising investments by the Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator (DESFA) that boost Greece’s geopolitical standing.
