Google has made prompt-based AI music generation more accessible by bringing it into the Gemini app.
If you’re a Gemini user, you can now use text, image and video prompts to generate 30-second AI tracks right within the app. This comes as Google rolls out beta access to Lyria 3, its AI music generation tool, powered by DeepMind.
The updated tool rolled out globally, for users over the age of 18, on the 18th of February, and is available in English, German, Spanish, French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese. The Verge reports that there are plans to expand languages in the future.
Working similarly to major AI music generation platforms like Suno and Udio, Lyria 3 enables users to enter text prompts describing the mood, genre, and general “vibe” of the music you want to create. Google’s own examples include “Create an intro track for my podcast about cats”, and “Write a nostalgic song about my home town.” From this, the generator can churn out instrumental tracks, as well as songs with lyrics. Additionally, users can upload images and videos as a prompt that Gemini can use to inform the mood and feel of the track.
Gemini automatically generates cover art for each track, thanks to Nano Banana, and delivers tracks as MP4 files. If users want to just download the audio, they can choose an MP3 file instead. Gemini also embeds a watermark to clearly signpost that the track has been generated by AI.
Currently, there is a limit on how many tracks can be created per user. Once the limit is exceeded, a notificaiton is sent, and users can either upgrade their subscription to access a higher limit, or simply wait for their existing limit to refresh.
Google explained, “The goal of these tracks isn’t to create a musical masterpiece, but rather to give you a fun, unique way to express yourself.” There is an emphasis on creating funny, light-hearted, group chat-worthy 30-second audio clips. Google also makes it clear that Lyria 3 is not designed for mimicking existing artists, and is meant for “original expression”. If a prompt references a particular aritst, “Gemini will take this as broad creative inspiration and create a track that shares a similar style or mood.” It claims that there are filters in place to check outputs against existing content, aiming to avoid straight up copying.
